Is My Brother Dead?

My brother and I were going to get together today and take our mother out to dinner and shopping. I called my brother at 11:30. No answer. That wasn’t unusual. He usually called back. By noon he hadn’t called back. So I called again. No answer. We told Mom we would pick her up between 1:30 and 2:00. I figure maybe my brother was in the shower. But he didn’t call back. I tried again at 12:30. No answer. That was very unusual. And he still did not call me back. I called the home where Mom is living and told them I have not been able to get ahold of my brother so I didn’t know what was going on. We might be late. At 12:45 I called again. No answer. Something was not right. Never has he not answered the phone this close to time to pick up Mom. It’s about a thirty minute drive for him to get to Mom’s. I tried again at 1:00. Still no answer. I thought maybe he had gone to one of his friends where it was out of his cellphone range. I decided to call his friend. The phone was busy. I tried my brother again at 1:15. No answer. Now I was getting really worried. I decided to call my brother’s landlord who lives close to my brother. No answer. It was 1:30. No way was my brother going to be on time. I tried calling him again. Still no answer. I tried his friend again. The line was still busy. Then his landlord. No answer. I called Mom’s place and told them I still could not get ahold of my brother. I would head there with the hope that he would call. When I hung up, for good measure, I called him again. No answer. When I reached Mom’s the lady running the home told me my brother had called and said he had fallen asleep and had just woke up. At least he wasn’t dead. My brother arrived about an hour late. As soon as he did I got the story. He had “accidentally” turned the volume down on his phone and didn’t hear it ring. He slept right through it. He may not had died, but he was lucky I didn’t wring his neck. We still took Mom to dinner snd shopping–just a little later than planned.

I am sure you were so worried. I am glad it all worked out in the end and your brother is fine. I am happy that you had a gerat time with your mom and were still able to take her out to eat.

@poehere My brother plays pool and card games sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning. So he's used to sleeping until noon. That's why I call him when we are to meet up–to make sure he has gotten up or is at least awake.

What was he doing sleeping so late @RichardMeister ? Does he work a late night shift or something?

Lucky for him he lived after giving you his explanation - all that worrying must've turned into instant annoyance . I had a friend who pulled that all the time. She'd make plans with me or our mutual friends - and she was either extremely late or wouldn't show up at all, leaving everyone worried - especially since she never picked up her phone. At the time she was a total workaholic and was going on little sleep . . . so she would indeed oversleep (she couldn't wake up if you hit her with a baseball bat) but it was irresponsible of her to not think of giving anyone a courtesy call. I hope your mom wasn't too upset!

I was more relieved than annoyed. My bother is almost always late but he usually answers the phone or calls me back right away.

@RichardMeister I remember you said your brother was often late. My friend is known to be flaky this way, so we expect to be annoyed.

I think I'm just glad your brother is ok! Funnily enough my friend had the same experience with me the other day and got equality as worried.Same story. I had turned the phone down low and then fallen asleep.

There has been times my brother hasn't answered the phone but this was the first time this happened when we had plans.

We pick up our mom at least once a month and take her shopping and someplace to eat.
