Our homeschool schedule is a little different than traditional schools. We basically go all year round, but our days out are the special occasions we want to celebrate as a family. During the summer, we have classes and workshops that we open up to family and friends (from public/private) schools. They participate with us in our learning ventures. During the summer we try to get creative and do something fun and different. One summer (2014), we did a research/presentation workshop in which the students were 1. assigned a topic (examples: disney movie, 2nd continental congress, four major weather disasters, etc.) 2. assigned a theme (examples: horror movie villain, musical genre, historical time period, etc.) 3. they had to research their topic and present it the following week. But they could not do a traditional speech. They had to dress, talk, and act out their presentation based on their theme. It was hilarious and informative. These are the school days that make the best memories.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I am sure that what they discovered and learned will stay with them a long time.

Two of my students from that summer have graduated, but they still talk about that summer as well as some of our other activities as their best memories.
