Our family went to Mount Rushmore in 1976. I went back to South Dakota in the late 90s. It’s an awesome site to see. The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, designed and sculpted the 60 foot faces of the four U.S. Presidents. Left to right: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. He began the work in 1927 and it wasn’t finished until 1941. Fourteen years! Mount Rushmore is definitely one place that I would recommend seeing for anyone who has never seen it. South Dakota isn’t usually a state that most people choose to visit when they come to the U.S. but there is a LOT to see in South Dakota. The Badlands is another place that we visited. It’s an awesome place to visit, and the Black Hills. Now there is also another sculpture being done there. We saw the early beginnings of this sculpture of Chief Crazy Horse, when we went back in the late 90s. I need to research the progress that has been made on that. I know that it will take years to complete and I don’t even know if it is getting done.

Its really something to see. It's HUGE for one thing and the likenesses are amazing. It makes me wonder, how does a person know where to begin on something that huge.

It's quite memorable, but perhaps a child might have a difficult time remembering it.

Yes, I have it was great! I would like to go back sometime. It was an impressive site and we saw a bit of the CRazy Horse sculpture as well. IT was about 100 degrees under a clear blue sky when I was there about 10 years ago..

Wow! That's HOT for South Dakota. I remember hearing that some people were passing out there a few years ago. Maybe that's when you were there?

Exciting that you have seen it. I have only seen photos, read about it and seen it in movies. I love seeing Cary Grant climbing around there in North By Northwest. Here is a nice clip of it.
Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) and Eve Kendall ( Eva Marie Saint) are being chased down Mount Rushmore running from Two thugs that work for Phillip Vandamm ( J...

Yes, I love that movie too. I just saw it again recently on Turner Classic Movies, I think it was. Thanks for the link. That scene is particularly intense.

My oldest son's father-in-law is from North Dakota. He still owns property there.

I have never been there but have driven through part of South Dakota, I do want to make it there eventually. We even went as far as planning out a vacation there but a family emergency came up and put those plans on hold for a while. Perhaps next summer I can get out there.
