Last night about 10PM, my son and his wife returned home from a Golf tournament at Myrtle Beach. They were gone for 5 days. My son did bring home a trophy. However, while they were gone, their son and I took care of their aging cat. He was 14 years old. They had taken him to the vet several times over the last six months, changed his diet, put him on antibiotics, gave him intravenous fluids and everything else that could possibly be done to keep him alive. But… yesterday, he took a turn for the worse and could barely move around by the time they got home last night. My daughter-in-law held him for a long time with tears streaming down her face and finally they decided to take him and have him put down. It was a very tearful decision, but… They left the house about 11:30PM and were gone quite a while. My grandson went with them. The only vet that was available was way across town, an emergency animal hospital. They got back very late and I had been waiting up for them. They were all distraught, including me, but we finally went on to bed and my daughter-in-law was crying this morning when I went over to check on them. Today, I had been invited to a Pool Party and Mexican lunch around the pool, so I Ieft here about 11:30 and went to the party. The food was great. We played some trivia too, and most everyone got in the pool although the water was cold, after all the rain we had yesterday. The sun was warm though and everyone had a great time. I just got home about an hour ago and I noticed all the cat paraphernalia had been removed from the Laundry room. They are talking about getting a NEW kitty, but I don’t think they are in a hurry to do so. My house is attached to their house but completely separate, except for the laundry room which we can go through to each other’s house. It’s so sad when you have to lose your pet to death, but especially when you’ve had one for 14 years. It will be a long time before we stop looking for him under our feet. He was a good cat though, very loving and very soft fur. We are certainly going to miss him. The cat in the photo looks just like our cat but it’s NOT our cat. And it’s NOT our door, either. .

@fishtiger58 My husband and I always had cats for the kids when they were growing up. I decided not to have a pet myself after the kids were all grown and on their own. I loved having a cat and we had several over the years. It's just so difficult when they die.

That's probably what my daughter-in-law is thinking. I don't think she is in a hurry to get another cat, but I could be wrong.

A I'm sorry. It's really difficult to lose a pet, especially one that has been a part of your family for many years. I don't know if my daughter-in-law will get a new kitten or not. They are talking about it.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your cat. I've been there too, when I lost Marshall a year ago this weekend. Just remember the good memories you've had as he crossed over the rainbow bridge.

Have you gotten another cat since you lost Marshall. My daughter-in-law has been thinking about getting a new kitten but I think its too soon now. We always enjoy our pets but its inevitable that they will die sooner or later. So, its always a difficult decision.

@KristenH Yes, that's what was going on with our cat. He couldn't walk anymore, and he seemed to be in pain but he didn't cry out.

@IreneVincent Nope. I would love too, but Wylie is very needy these days. I can't afford to adopt one now. I agree. I hated to see Marshall suffer the way he did, when he had trouble walking and then couldn't walk.

Thanks Dianne, he was a big part of our family and we are going to miss him. It's a sad thing to lose a pet, but I know that many people on here have had that experience. It's inevitable but still a very SAD thing.

So sorry hear this news I think that animals usually become more like a family member than just an animal and it does take time to recover just like when you lose a person.

It is always very sad when a pet passes. It always feels like something is really missing. My Sid is 12 but appears to be lively and healthy and eat like a horse but since I am now alone with just him I always keep an eagle eye out on him especially when I don't know where he is.
