This shabby old thing

Here you can see my progress for the night. I did not take pictures of this forlorn furniture before I did anything. The shelf had no back, and the top was not attached either. I am going to leave the top off until I select a color and paint the inside.
I had this piece of half inch thick plywood just sitting around. It was becoming weathered and I needed to use it. When I had first broken my glass table I had hoped to use the plywood on it, but it was too small. As you can see in the picture, it was just right to make a back for the book shelf.
My next step is to fill in any gaps with wood filler. Then I will sand the plywood. After that I will brush on some lovely color to the whole interior. I will also have to paint the shelves. I have them, and the top, down in the shed.
It is amazing what nine or ten screws, a judiciously applied hammer and a scrap of plywood can do to begin restoring a wasted piece of furniture to a useful life.

It is a start. I am silly but I always feel sorry for things that seem to have lost their usefulness.

@GardenGerty I do too! I have a bunch of stuff that would be junk to other people but to me they're treasures and need love just as much as new, pristine things.

Reuse, recycle, repurpose... the three Rs of the frugal set.
I try to do it as much as possible, too.

I need to get the wood filler in soon so I can get it painted, after sanding of course.

Heather, it is cool when we can find things we can fix up and make them like brand new.

Even as a child I always wanted to fix things. Guess it is a good hobby.

Of course the outside will continue with the oak stain and varnish. Inside I think I want a warm color that is fairly light. A peach or a sandalwood color, maybe.

It also saves a ton of money. When you find old things you also find real wood and not particle board.

Oh, I try. Sometimes I think of things but never have time and materials to do them. I am glad this was an easy fix.
