Bad experience at a Japanese restaurant

My hubby and I went to a Japanese restaurant last night. We ordered what they called a volcano salad. The dish actually resembled the shape of a volcano. We cut into it and saw that there was octopus inside. We don't eat octopus and would never order anything that had octopus in it. The menu, which specified what was in the dish, did not mention this creature. We told the waitress what happened and she took the salad away. She even gave us clean plates and utensils. I thought she would just give us a refund. Instead, she had the chef remake the dish without the octopus. We cut the new volcano salad in half again to make sure there was no octopus. Thankfully, it wasn't there. We started eating the salad and everything was okay, but then I bit into something that tasted like crab or lobster or shrimp. Couldn't figure out what. We specifically said we don't eat shellfish. Why was it then in our food? I told hubby this and he said it wasn't shellfish, but to me it tasted like it, so it had to be in there. I didn't not finish the salad after that. And this wasn't the only screw up with the order. I ordered miso soup. Instead, they brought me mushroom soup. I didn't feel like exchanging it, so ate it. It was rather good and I enjoyed it. But the point is, that I didn't order mushroom soup, so they should't have given it to me. Not the greatest experience at this restaurant the second time around. And my hubby gave more than a 20% tip. He was way too generous. The first time we went to this place there were no mix-ups or screw ups with our order. Everything was amazing! After this second experience, which didn't go as well, not sure if I want to go back there again any time soon.

Do you not eat shellfish due to religious reasons? Was the octopus cooked? I have had it raw and loved it.

@lovebuglena There are many things I don't eat because I can't or don't like them, but shellfish of any kind I'm good with. I would not make a good Jew.

@AbbyGreenhill If he wasn't in my life I'd eat all those things, especially pork. I love bacon!

I don't eat shellfish, seafood, and some of the fish because my husband doesn't eat it. And he doesn't eat it for religious reasons. I used to it everything before i met him. And believe it or not, he used to eat everything as well before his parents placed him into a Yeshiva as opposed to public school. After that he stopped eating all these things.

So sorry you had to experience this. I've read your responses to the other posts that asked about your reasons for not eating shellfish. Props to you for making that commitment.

Thanks. There are people that think I'm crazy for doing this. They say that around him I shouldn't eat this stuff out of respect for him, but without him I should eat it to my heart's content. I can't do that. That's like cheating. Plus, I don't want to put myself in a situation where when I am around him I really start to crave for what I can't have. So, I chose to erase these things from my consumption altogether. Can't say I have strong cravings for these things now. Probably because I have not eaten these things for a few years. But there are times when I wouldn't mind some pork bacon or a pork chop, or even some lobster.

I hope you'll find a different restaurant with a better dining experience to enjoy...

I try to go to a new place every Saturday. Doesn't always happen. Sometimes we have events to go to on a Saturday and can't go out to eat.

So sorry to read this Lena. Nothing worse than getting your order wrong. Yes that was very generous of your hubby to tip like that considering their mistakes. I know I wouldnt want to go back there.

It must be hard for you to go out to eat. Are there a lot of restaurants that serve vegetarian dishes?

Wow! sounds like a rough dinner... it's times like those that I feel it's best to just cook at home.. you know what you're putting together and how well you cook it before you serve it to yourself... not to mention the amount of money you save

It is definitely better to cook your own dishes. You know exactly what goes in there. But there are things you won't make yourself and would only go to a restaurant to try it. As far as saving money goes, it depends on where you buy the ingredients and what kind you buy. It can still be a pricey homemade dinner lol.
