A place to go

Japan

I am always talking about being prepared for an earthquake, but when one hits I just stand in the doorway. That is good, but it's recommended to have a solid desk or table to get under. I don't have space or use for such a thing, but today I figured out how to make a solid spot in my closet. I have a rug, pillow (for exiting, to protect my head), a flashlight and a whistle in case I need help. Not only can I use it for earthquakes, but I think my cat will use it as a cat cave! When I was a kid, we always went to the basement for tornadoes, and it was mostly a storage area, but my dad put an old couch down there so we could be comfortable if there was a tornado warning in the middle of the night (there were plenty; tornadoes thought our town was a great place to visit, even knocking most of it down several times.) So I guess I am carrying on his legacy. Do you have a "safe space"? Or how might you make one?

Thats a very good idea Denise. Here I do not have a space that is safe as I am in apartments 3 stories up..so I will run outside.

Make sure you know where to run to, and what is above you so you can avoid stuff falling on you.

We usually don't get severe weather in our area. We are surrounded by mountains. If there were flooding we can easily jump in our vehicles and head for higher ground.

I have no place in this house and have not even thought about it. I should, I suppose.

Hi, At least, with a tornado, people have more time to get warned and prepared to evacuate the area. On the other hand, one should be on constant alert, in anticipation of an earthquake, because it is not possible to know when exactly it will hit. I believe, one of the most difficult situations would be if an earthquake hits when one sleeps.

In Japan I have learned that people are always ready in times of disaster, and that is a good thing. And because of your father's awareness, it comes to you too.

Last night we watched a documentary about the tsunami in Japan. Since the serious big earthquake happened at that time and therefore there would be the tsunami. It was a horrible disaster. So it is necessary for you to prepare for an earthquake because it often happens in Japan. Even if we just had a travel there for a week, we still experienced the earthquake a few times.

I don't have a table or desk on second floor. I have a table downstairs.
