Injured in the line of duty, and some further thoughts on nipples.

One of the "troubled" kids I work with is a 14-year-old who loves basketball. He's pretty good, but like many kids these days, he takes too many outside shots, which are low-percentage. He wanted to play against me, but for two months, I refused, saying I wanted to be "teammates," not opponents. Finally, last Friday, I said we could play one on one, but reminded him that I wanted to return to "helping each other get better" after a quick game, as that seems more therapeutically appropriate. I decided not to hold back too much, and pretty much "schooled" him. But on one play, he fouled me hard as I was going in for a lay-up. I told him to play clean, and let him know, "that's going to leave a bruise." He handled it all pretty well, accepting defeat without excuses and not fouling again as we shot around a bit more. I decided to take a picture of the bruise to show him, in case it's gone by Friday. Of course, the photo shows my right nipple. That got me to wondering why I can show my nipple with impunity, while it would be deemed inappropriate or even obscene if a woman did so. At least here in the US. Are women's nipples deemed "naughty bits" where you live? When I was in Austria, I saw kids running around naked at the pool we visited, and women sunbathing topless. The men and women changed into our swimsuits in the same dressing room. It seemed natural, and I habituated to the whole scene within about three minutes. Is your country more or less Puritanical than the US about nipples and other body parts?

Do you remember the video for "Pop Song 89" by R.E.M.? Michael Stipe and three models, all dancing topless. Stipe insisted that they black out his nipples as well since they did it to the girls.

I forgot about that! They all had the black bars across their chests.

Oh, I hadn't heard about that. And I do have a few REM albums.

@TheHorse @teamfreak16 I think I saw it, of all places, on Beavis & Butthead.

I don't think Australia is very far behind the US in being puritanical. No topless bathing allowed here except in designated places although I doubt you'd get arrested for it.

I wonder if anyone would actually get arrested for such a thing here.

Personally I would never go running around anywhere without a top on in public. But I have personal reasons for feeling that way, and actually glad that here in the US we do not go around showing them off.

I think we habituate to whatever the cultural norms are around us.

@thehorse all this talk about nipples and their exposure is getting me all of a dither. I'm even feeling a little pressure to post a (tasteful) picture of my own nipular area. But we've all got a fair idea about what's under each other's clothes so we really need to get over ourselves.

I'm just hoping that the kid who fouled me so hard apologizes this Friday. Happily, my nipple is fine.

The bruises on one arm, are definitely a NO-NO. But, my doctor examines nipples, as if I'm a routine, science project. If we bathed and swam topless, my husband would also delight in 'multiple wives.'

@MALUSE I'd think a physician, male or female, would habituate to body parts pretty quickly.

@MALUSE Yes, I know. It happened to this man's work partner, he's no longer a practicing gynecologist.

@TheHorse Any body part is just that, another piece of a miraculous puzzle, to help us functional more efficiently. Nipple? Oh yes it almost slipped my mind, to feed a hungry infant, about 45 years ago.
