Lessons Learned from Volleyball- #1

Pride comes before a fall! Proverbs 16:18 reads, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." My daughter's volleyball team learned this lesson last weekend. On Thursday, they played a team in a neighboring city. It was a tough game for both jr. varsity and varsity. It wasn't so much because their opponents were amazing players, but because they not only had to play the opposing volley ball team, but the referees, as well. There were so many bad calls in that game. The refs were blatantly biased toward our opponents. Yet, even though there were many, many unfair and wrong penalties, both of our teams still won. The feeling of victory among these girls was flowing strong, especially since we were on the opponents turf. Saturday, we played that same team, only we were on our home court. The girls felt confident about an easy win. Not only was the opposing team not the toughest team we had played, we knew the refs our team hired would be fair and honest (and they were). Our girls went in ready to stomp some volleyball butt. But they were in for a rude awakening. They were not prepared for what they got. Jr. Varsity got the snot beat out of them and our varsity team barely won. My daughter (who is jr. varsity) came to me after the game and said, "mama, we were not expecting that. We got a little too sure of ourselves and we got beat bad". That is an important lesson learned. It is a lesson we need to apply to every area of our lives. Humility is the way to live. And always, we have to prepare. We can never let our guard down. This made me analyze my own life and make sure that I am not clinging to any haughty or arrogant attitudes.
