Brown and dirty water in the house...

Today, I turned on the hot water in the shower and noticed that it was very brown and dirty. Then I turned on the cold water to see if it was the same. It didn't seem to be brown but I could see that it wasn't 100% clear. I checked the sink in the same bathroom, then went to the kitchen and everywhere else in the house. The issue was exactly the same everywhere I checked. I can't shower or brush my teeth, can't wash the dishes, can't do anything that requires the use of water. Could this be a sewer issue? And are we the only ones experiencing this? We went to ask the neighbors but no one was home. I heard that if hot water is brown and dirty that there could be a problem with the water heater and it may need to be replaced. I hope that is not the case because replacing will cost a lot of money. I have no idea what to do. I can't be without clean water.

This same thing happened to us, when our hot water heater was going. Sludge was coming out of our pipes:(

Did you have to get your water heater replaced?

@kobesbuddy Our water heater is since the 90s. Maybe it's rusted inside and needs to be replaced.

I have no idea if the water heater is rusted inside or not. We did not get anyone to come and take a look at it. The water from the faucet (hot and cold) seem to be clear today. So, maybe the water heater is fine and it was another issue that caused it to be brown.
