Soundtrack albums is the theme of this particular music series, and we have reached #5: Valley Girl. The soundtrack from the 1983 movie, Valley Girl, is an 80's new wave fan's dream, chock full of groovy tunes from that genre, and more. Expensive songs, too. The film's budget was a mere $350,000, but the rights for the songs used cost another $250,000 on top of that. It was worth it. Power pop band The Plimsouls contributed three songs, including the minor hit "A Million Miles Away" (the band performed the song in the movie,) which reached #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also appearing was Josie Cotton, who contributed two songs, including the popular "Johnny are You Queer?," which received lots of airplay on alternative radio. But there is more to the album than those two acts. "Eyes of a Stranger" by the Payolas peaked at #22 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, while Modern English's "I Melt with You" stalled at #78 on the Hot 100 (oddly, that is the one song on the soundtrack that has since become overplayed to death.) Also included are songs by the Psychedelic Furs, Sparks, Men at Work, and even hard rock guitarist Pat Travers. I've linked to the official video for "A Million Miles Away" (what can I say?
