Favorite Soundtrack Albums #5 - Valley Girl

Soundtrack albums is the theme of this particular music series, and we have reached #5: Valley Girl.
The soundtrack from the 1983 movie, Valley Girl, is an 80's new wave fan's dream, chock full of groovy tunes from that genre, and more. Expensive songs, too. The film's budget was a mere $350,000, but the rights for the songs used cost another $250,000 on top of that.
It was worth it. Power pop band The Plimsouls contributed three songs, including the minor hit "A Million Miles Away" (the band performed the song in the movie,) which reached #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also appearing was Josie Cotton, who contributed two songs, including the popular "Johnny are You Queer?," which received lots of airplay on alternative radio.
But there is more to the album than those two acts. "Eyes of a Stranger" by the Payolas peaked at #22 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, while Modern English's "I Melt with You" stalled at #78 on the Hot 100 (oddly, that is the one song on the soundtrack that has since become overplayed to death.) Also included are songs by the Psychedelic Furs, Sparks, Men at Work, and even hard rock guitarist Pat Travers.
I've linked to the official video for "A Million Miles Away" (what can I say? It's my favorite song from the movie.)
Enjoy!

As a Peter Case fan you know I approve of "A Million Miles Away." Never saw the movie, but I know how Moon Unit Zappa's impersonation of a "valley girl" annoyed me, so if they spent 90 minutes talking like that it's definitely a "get the soundtrack, skip the movie" option.

It's a pretty good movie. A very young Nicholas Cage stars.

@teamfreak16 Maybe because I had sons and grandkids who played everything from drums to trumpet and I appreciate the peace and quiet. But I still listen to music at times.

Always enjoyed the overplayed "I Melt With You" by Modern English. That 1983 flick starred a very young Nicholas Cage who went on to win an Oscar in the movie "Leaving Lost Vegas." BTW, your song choice from The Plimsouls was very good.

My favorite Modern English song is "Life in the Gladhouse." They were a good band. Should have gotten more recognition than they got.

It's a "Don't have to see the movie to enjoy the soundtrack" soundtrack.
