R U spending small amounts of money for tiny purchases using your cash on hand or debit or credit card and realizing it is making you quickly go for broke?
A friend of mine tells it like it is.
It is a fact that:
Anyone who uses a debit/credit/bank card of some type, will make lots more nickel and dime type purchases in a shorter time than by only paying with just the cash in your pocket or, by writing out a check at the check-out register.
One drawback with doing it by check is, You don't get immediate debit from your bank to get immediate balance information in your checking account.
When you stand in line writing a check you also tend to make others impatient.
Read about the 5 - ways to break the habit:
Have you ever pulled cash from the ATM, only to find your purse or wallet empty again by the end of the day? Well, I must have some shopping bags or something to show for it. Apparently not…what on earth…Read more ›

My debit card rounds up all my purchases and puts them in savings. So I don't mind as much.

I get that . yea. it does good to round off to the nearest dollar. Maybe you get to save a little by that method. But, still isn't it a good idea just to take cash out of the bank you will need to do your shopping and keep it at a minimum so you know where your money is going?

We tend to use our debit card, but not for nickel and dime purchases. Some times our checks, printed at Vista Print, do not scan at Wal Mart. Hubby usually has cash if he needs some little stuff. I do not go anywhere that would tempt me to use my cash. I can keep twenty dollars in my wallet for a month, easily. I do not doubt that this is true, though. I have a friend whose husband does this all day as he travels for work. He uses the ATM and pays a fee to buy a soda.
the people who need to break this habit likely will not read a post like this.

Well for me I don't really go very many places at all. However my husband is famous for this. He wonders at times where it goes, I try to tell him when you spend 3 here, 5 there, 1 here .. it all adds up. Luckily he doesn't do it much thou. Most of our money is accounted for. Fridays are the worst for him.

For me, just doing without for some time, then getting some money and spending most of it on utilities and insurance, there is just enough left over for me to buy a new pair of sneakers and a snickers bar. So I tend to over indulge at times.

@lookatdesktop Oh ok, I think there`s an existing app that helps you get updated everytime you use your card and can also see the balance

I have two debit cards. One account holds the money to pay for bills so it doesn't get touched and the other holds the money when I need it for purchases like groceries. I have cash on hand for whenever I need it. However I only make purchases when needed.

You must come from a very good upbringing. If I followed the path of my dad, I would save, save and save.

Cash gets things without any hassle. I tend to pull out money and somebody looks at me and asks for a hand out. That is because of where I shop at times. It's hard to keep money hidden from others in a public place where many people converge in the same place.

I use a credit card because it is safer than using a debit card. Both my husband and I do tend to spend more with it. We do a have some credit card debt. But, that is life.

By using their credit cards is the main reason why some people gets large debts and can't get out of debt.

You are so right. I find that Starbucks reminds me when my card is below 25 dollars and suggests I use the auto load method of a specified amount to be deducted once a week or a month based on preferences. I don't bother adding much more than ten bucks to the card cause if I lost it some one else would be getting lots of free lattes and that would not be good for me at all. So keeping a coffee card under 10 or 20 dollars and only using it sparingly, is the way I use mine.
