George Michael’s house

I wanted to explore some places not too far away that I hadn’t visited before, so the other day we went for an afternoon out to Goring on Thames, which is a nice little town/large village on the river side. It has some interesting little shops and a lovely setting in a very historic site that has been inhabited for thousands of years. What I hadn’t realised was that it was also the place where the late George Michael, pop musician, 80s heart-throb and gay icon, had lived. As we walked along we passed the end of an alleyway and noticed an accumulation of stuff along the side, and closer inspection revealed that this was the back door to George Michael’s last home. I can’t help wondering what he would have thought of all the flags, teddy bears, candles, photos, Christmas tree decorations and all manner of other decorations and trinkets festooned all over the walls and bushes. Not to mention the problem faced by the next owners, whoever they are/ will be. Have you ever felt the urge to leave some token at the home of a dead idol? No, why on earth would I want a dirty soft toy or a sentimental wall plaque that's been hanging out in the rain?

I don't know - but who would buy it and have to put up with all those 'pilgrims' hanging about their door?

I had no idea the house was there either and it cannot be far from me. It is a strange habit we have of leaving things the person who has passed away can have no use for. Flowers I get, but why would an adult want a collection of teddies and lamps in Heaven?

That's just it, the person in question would probably hate all that stuff!

@Fleura The real reason people do it is because it gives comfort to the living in some strange way.

I just don't get why people bother. And that isn't the sort of home I'd have attributed to GM. How silly of me!

I've never felt the need to do that but there must be dozens who leave tokens of some sort at these places.

I wonder who will be willing to live in the house now, with all that tat outside their door all the time?

@Fleura He's been gone a while I think. Maybe people will stop bringing stuff eventually.
