A pristine Holden Sandman - what stories it could tell

While at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle, Western Australia, we came across this Holden Sandman panel van. This type of vehicle was very popular when surfing first became the rage. Every teenage boy across the country yearned for a panel van with his surfboard on the roof and a mattress in the back.
Fathers of teenage girls were very suspicious of lads with panel vans which soon became known as ‘shaggin’ wagons’. It seems this one fits the bill as one of the stickers on it says ‘Don’t come a’knockin’ if the wagon’s arockin’’.
Within the last few days, the last Holden vehicle has rolled out the doors of the Australian car manufacturer of the same name putting thousands out of work. A sad day for those involved.

I'm not sure what will happen to them. It is a great shame - the end of an era really.

That is like the old Ford "woodie" station wagons (they were called) in the US, even mentioned in a song by the Beach Boys. Great looking van.

There was an Aussie movie from the 70s called The FJ Holden.

They seem to be intent on axing jobs thinking it saves money but all these people then have to go on the dole and the government doesn't end up saving anything at all.

I think it's interesting. We don't see such vans here.

I'm not sure that they make them anymore. Certainly they don't make Holdens but perhaps there is another make that is similar.

Oh wow, I totally need to get one of those. Too bad they aren't going to make them anymore.

It looks like our local wagon that my dad had in 1970s

That's probably about the time this model came into being.
