Once You've Quit Smoking or Eating Sweets, How Do You STAY Quit?

So, you've managed to dump a bad habit, like smoking or eating unhealthy food. Congrats to you! Also, good luck staying on the straight and narrow, because addictions are super hard not to fall back into. Why so? The problem is not just that they are habits, but that sugar and nicotine are DRUGS that stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain, setting up a reward feedback for the consumption. So that's the stumbling block if you try to go cold turkey, and that's what the slippery slope is greased with, if you make that first doughnut shop visit: endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones that not only make you feel pleasure, they actually put a damper on pain, which is why you really DO feel better after having such things. But we all know that stuff is really bad for you! So what's the trick to stay quit? Well, it's NOT to live a monastic lifestyle of denial, because humans just aren't built that way. Instead, find a substitute activity that makes you feel pleasure! Something healthy, of course. A lot of people are pleased to find out that they can get a real high from exercise, but I'm personally a fan of exercise-that-doesn't-feel-like-exercise, like dancing, sports, etc. Eating celery and putting in hours on the treadmill doesn't sound nearly as much fun as eating donuts and smoking, does it? But swimming and roller skating? I'll take that any day!

I am glad I never started smoking to begin with. Since it is so hard to quit.

It seems so. I'm lucky I never did, either. The sweets are definitely another story, though!

It's very hard for most people to do everything perfectly. Congratulations!

I do think it is difficult. If we have a strong will, we can do it.

It's a little easier when you have something else you can look forward to, though :)

@AliCanary I do agree with you. We need to set specific goals to do it.

A great article and you're so right about replacing a bad habit with a good, but also pleasurable one.

Yes, it's no use not having anything to do as a substitute--one will go back to the bad habit.

I sure struggle with sweets. Exercise, even the fun kind takes more motivation than I can muster.

@paigea - Unfortunately, inertia is a very powerful force.

It can be very hard, sometimes. I come home from work feeling tired, and although I know that exercise would actually perk me up, all I want to do is sleep!

I don't mind treadmills, but I would much rather be outside doing something.

Yes, there are a lot of ways to get exercise and get things done, as well. I'd rather walk SOMEWHERE, like to the library or to the store.

Smoking is just bad period and I have never smoked. You can get away with sweets is consumed in moderation. One donut once a month won't be bad especially when balanced with days of no sweets at all.

Yes, I'm lucky I never started, either. I also think the occasional sweet wouldn't be bad, either, but some people have a hard time limiting themselves. Sometimes I can, and sometimes not
