I dislike overtly racist people

I work in food service. Most of the time I work in the front end so I am the first face people see when they walk in the store, especially on weekends. My coworker is here now, but I open and the first two hours I work alone. When she gets in, I try and catch up on setting out the cookies and cakes and pastries out in the front. I get off my register and grab gloves to go finish putting the cookies in the bag and then label them and this lady purposefully comes and stands at my register and turns her back to my coworker. My coworker says politely "Ma'am, I can take you right here." , but no, she stands there pointedly staring at me and so I take off my gloves and take her order. My coworker is a very dark skinned African American young lady. I am Puerto Rican, but apparently I pass for white. This isn't the first time this has happened either and it annoys the crap out me knowing that people would rather wait for me to stop doing something that have an available cashier attend to them. It's so frustrating

Racist people can be very stupid. Even if I was a racist I wouldn't care who served me as I just want to buy my stuff and get out asapalthough I do have some shop people I very much dislike. Just a small point...you say it isn't the first time it has happened. Do you mean with the same co worker? It could be people don't like her for reasons other than her colour?? What I mean by that is I'm a regular in various shops in my area and have some workers I like and some I dislike...I try to go to the workers I like...not based on colour or nationality just on attitude.

She's a very nice young lady, certainly more patient than I. Every person that has snubbed her has been white, what other reason would they have to snub her? She's never rude, always smiles, takes their orders correctly, etc. She's never even gotten one complaint to management and even I've been complained about (albeit for something ridiculous: I told a customer soup wasn't served until closer to lunch time, and it was 830am lol).

the people that snub her have not been regulars. The regulars all know us by name already. We know most of our regulars by name too. I both open and close so I know just about all the regulars.

I have some favorite servers too! Its not even a matter of their work skills but because they remember my kids and do things for their care. Like allergies they know certain things can't be eaten and if I got to order say a cheese less pizza they do the order without hassle! Cause they know and understand my baby girl can't have milk (in cheese)!

if i can see you're doing something work-related, and another employee is qualified to take my order or accept my payment or whatever i need, i find it impractical to wait for you and inconsiderate, too, to interrupt whatever you're doing.

That's how I feel about it. There wasn't even a line. My coworker was clearly available and even called her over. I had to take off a brand new set of gloves to attend to her when I had a display case to fill

@acrogodess unnecessary waste of resources especially when you're cost cutting

... and we are supposed to be living in the present age with no discrimination what so ever.

@acrogodess people need to learn to look beyond the color of one's skin.

There's always going to be some sort of discrimination, but most people are never so blantant about it that they inconvenience other employees to avoid being attended by one. That's just ridiculous.

I've always been under the impression that good manners are very important. So to have someone be so blantantly rude to both my coworker and I really irks me

Ewwww, I would find that very hard to deal with. I would want to ignore that customer.

That's awful of them! I really hope in my lifetime that it can get to a point where skin color doesn't matter. Unfortunately I think it would take an earth shattering event like meeting green skinned aliens for us all to appreciate other humans.

I don't think it'll happen in our lives or our children's lifetimes

@acrogodess I'm still hoping! It seems racism has been a thing for hundreds of years.
