Yes, I Know That's a Reference From My Favorite Movie...I'm Not Stupid!

Anyone who knows me in real life, or even just on Facebook for that matter, knows that I am a huge Ghostbusters fanatic. I have been obsessed with Ghostbusters since before I can remember. My entire childhood was dedicated to loving that film and its sequel, as well as the cartoon based on it.
Earlier I found a message sent to me on Facebook from some strange bearded guy that said "Are you the Gatekeeper?
" I assumed this was some kind of pickup line and he must have found me through a Ghostbusters fan page or something, because we have no mutual friends. I thought it was amusing and posted to my friends about the weirdo messaging that to me.
Then two men I know, one who is my cousin who was not even alive when either Ghostbusters movie was released, felt the need to explain to me that it was a Ghostbusters reference.
Which really ticked me off. I am not so stupid that I don't recognize a reference from my all-time favorite movie, which I am always posting about.
I have found that some men always act like this. They think that women are dumb and we don't know anything and they have to explain the obvious to us. Which is really damn insulting.
One of the guys who "mansplained" the reference is also always telling me to smile in my pictures and stating the obvious to me. I should tell him to take a bath and wear deodorant because you can smell his B.O. a mile away. But I am always too polite to say that, even though he feels the need to be condescending to me.
Why must some men always be condescending to women? Are they oblivious to the fact that this behavior is condescending? Sometimes I wish I were a man so I could speak my mind back to them without being verbally attacked. Also, if I were a man, I would not be receiving strange messages asking me if I'm the Gatekeeper to begin with.
I complained about this whole exchange to my boyfriend and he agreed with me that they were being condescending. At least he knows that women don't like this type of behavior.

@Srbageldog I think that this shows their childish side, they cannot understand what it's funny and what can be offending.

I completely agree. My cousin tried to make a joke out of it when I "thanked" him and the other guy for stating the obvious, but I didn't find it funny.
There are lots of men who think it is hilarious to say condescending, sexist things, but it really is not funny at all.

Oh my word, I was just talking about this to my dad. He was pretty condescending with me this weekend. My toilet clogged and overflowed. It was just clear water and I didn't understand why I couldn't get it to flush all the way down. I worked on it so much, and used so much force that I can't raise my arms over my shoulders this morning. Finally, I gave in and called my dad. He did his condescending attitude like you're too weak, and too incompetent to fix it (not his exact words, but you get the idea). Well, what do you know, he couldn't fix it either! I was so annoyed. I didn't give it a half hearted try; I went crazy on that thing. I didn't want to be patronized. It just couldn't be done.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. How frustrating! My dad can be the same way. I hate that men just assume these sorts of things about us, like we lack common sense. Maybe we should start treating them the way they treat us!

Most men do NOT realize they're being condescending. They think they're being helpful.
