You know me? Indeed. After twenty years of working in the education sector {mainstream secondary, followed by naughty school, and now post-16} I know a fair few folk. I have met the Good, but also the future Bad and the Ugly. I taught a Hollywood film star when he was nothing but a gawky teenager. I suppose though that it’s inevitable that I should know a lot of Bad. And Ugly. Let’s see .... the armed robber, the rapist, the car thief who died after driving at speed into a wall, the fifteen year old who was convicted of abusing his two year old niece whilst his dad – the instigator – got away with it {that was a very difficult one}, the brothers who stabbed someone to death in a street fight, the young man who stabbed someone because he could {I think they survived, but I may be wrong} ... I’m sure there are more, many that I may not even know about. And now I can add another one to my ever-growing list. When I heard the news that somebody had been stabbed to death I knew – I just knew – that I would know the accused. I scoured the local papers yesterday and I was right. I did know him. I worked with him for a couple of years, mostly in English lessons. He was a cheeky mare, a bit of a fool and he could be quite horrid. But he could also be lovely. And now I’m sad for a situation that was probably fuelled by alcohol and which resulted in two lives lost, one in a pool of blood and the other to years in prison. Two lives lost in a moment of insanity and two families grieving for what might have been, and never can be. Life is such a kerfuffle.

You worked with students for so many years, you have seen so many people, it's not surprising that often you see a name that you know. It's a shame when people you know have serious problem, very sad.

@Poppylicious It's incredible how many people we come to know during a working life. You, as a teacher, many more than other professions.

This is true. When I used to actually teach I taught half of each schooling worked in, due to my subject. Now I work across college. If I sat down and worked out exactly how many children and young people I've ever interacted with, it must number in the thousands and thousands! Madness. :)

I don't know what to say. It is difficult teaching anyone in normal situations (to me), it is harder to teach, guessing that some of the students there might turn worse. I read what you wrote there and felt so sad!

Sometimes it's VERY obvious that they're going to follow a more destructive path. It is sad when they're just a little cheeky and make rash decisions that spin their lives out of control.

@Poppylicious Was it because they already grew up in some unstable environment? Reading about cases like these, made me think of good materials got into wrong hands.

@YrNemo In many instances, yes. But in some there seem to be stable, happy family dynamics. Peer pressure, or maybe they're just wired that way.

That's really sad. I'm wondering though, based on your experience, which one is the most common factor for these people to be involved in crimes? Is it the environment they grew up in or social influence?

My goodness, from the way you wrote about the Bad and the Ugly, I could swear you were writing about your experiences living in an inner city of the United States, like Chicago or Los Angeles. And to think that most people think the United States is a violent place! haha Anyway, sorry to hear that you had to experience all that, and it's even worse when you read about something bad that happened and you find out you know the person. Pray tell, who is the Hollywood star?

Not telling! I've made it sound worse than it is. I did work in a school for naughty teenagers and that adds some weight!

It is. Especially when it's a student you don't necessarily expect. On the upside, when those who you would expect it from turn their lives around and transition into successful adults, its a proud moment!

@Poppylicious Yes indeed, so much of that we cannot foretell....the rough ends up smoothy, some looks like China but never vulnerable who is who is the big question still...
