I've just finished watching Salem, a show about the witches' role in the time of the Salem trials. I guess i have always been interest in witchcraft, ever since I saw Charmed, Practical Magic, the Harry Potter series, Bewitched etcetera but i have mixed feelings about it - like are there really good witches, where do the power come from? I know they are real, but i am scared to dig deeper because of my religion

Witches are great entertainment for tv and movies but are they real? Is magic real? I think not. The last I heard scientists determined that due to the real damp conditions at the time of the Salem witch trials the grain they grew acquired a fungus on it. Eating this fungus when they ate the grain caused some people to hallucinate. At that time in history, when people did not understand something, they blamed it on the devil and witches. The sad truth is that due to ignorance, many innocent people were indeed killed.

Witches are real but not necessarily in the way portrayed on TV. As for magic, that's a matter of opinion but many things formerly considered magic have since been explained by science (medicine being a prime example).

@lady1993 Sadly, it's a common misconception that all witches are bad. Those who cause deliberate harm are the exception, just like any other person of any other faith.

I haven't read a lot about Salem, but yeah, i do agree that the people killed during the trials weren't actually witches. It is quite unfortunate really

Well, I consider myself 'good' and I am what you might call a 'witch'. I'm not big on religion or faith but, if I were to describe my own beliefs, I describe myself as an Eclectic Witch or Eclectic Pagan. It is ironic that we're referred to as devil worshippers when we don't believe in the devil, or that we're considered evil when our main mantra is 'harm none'. The problem, I find, with the way people feel about witches and witchcraft is often a matter of misinterpretation misinformation (often deliberate, especially at the time of early Christianity in medieval England). There are 'bad' witches just as there are 'bad' people who claim to be of other faiths but, just as with other faiths, most of perfectly good people. Some witches believe in the same god as the Christian God (I've known a few Christian witches), while others believe in one or more Pagan gods/goddesses and this (along with nature) is where power is drawn. Spell-casting is, for example, for all intents and purposes, the same as praying. The only real difference is that sometimes witches use different tools and the 'wish' is presented to a different deity. If you'd like to know anything more, you can always ask. I really love learning about other religions and faiths and I think it's rather sad that being of one faith puts people off learning about others. There is no need to be scared. There isn't really anything scary about witchcraft. Of course, if you are set in your faith, you wouldn't perform the rituals or practices but there is no harm in learning about them.

@Letranknight2015 I've been researching it all for a book I'm working on. You are right that many witches (or people thought to be witches) were punished needlessly due to religion. Laws were even changed so that acts previously considered harmless became punishable simply because the act didn't fit with Christian teachings. In England, we had witchcraft laws until early 21st century, although theu had changed considerably over the centuries!

Unforunately due to the Church's lust for domination, they just discriminately killed all the witches regardless if they are good or bad.

You need to have deep faith in GOD before going at it deeper because you may end up being persuaded by it. There's nothing wrong about getting to know it as long as you know when to draw the line and stop.

I'm actually learning about witchcraft now. I've done spells and rituals before. I've always been a bit witchy deep down, and I've recently admitted I'm going to be a 'witch' to my family. My girlfriend is a Wiccan, she's taught me a lot as well. It's truly interesting. Many people have a negative opinion on "witches" due to Hollywood..but it truly has been an amazing experience so far! Glad you know we're real!

I was hooked to Charmed for a while, until I read about how the three main actresses in that series bickering with each other in real life, that turned me off.

I heard about that too I think it was only two of the sisters. And that is one of the reasons why one of them was killed off in the series... I like the new sister though

@YrNemo oh, i never thought there were other reasons for her removal. I bet the sister who stayed was glad she was caught red handed

@lady1993 yeah, sounds right there, the first and the third were bickering in real life, badly. The middle was OK. They removed the first, put a new one in. Three sisters at the time the series first came out. There were still 3 at the end? (even with a new cast?)
