Parent Teacher Conferences

Japan

At our school, and many other schools, we have each parent come in with their student and find out from the teachers what they are learning in class. Our job as teachers today is to show what we do in class (our curriculum from the beginning of school until now) and let them know briefly how their child is doing in our class. Each teacher has seven minutes with each parent in their class, with three minutes between conferences, so each parent/student group will have 70 minutes at school meeting with teachers. Elementary students meet together with parents and show their parents what they are doing in their portfolio and then the teacher tells them how they are doing and what the parents can do to help. The elementary conferences are 45 minutes. I don't teach a core subject, so I have not had many conferences, but I am also a translator because I can speak Japanese for some of the parents who are not confident in their English ability (we are an international school teaching in English.) Do your kids have parent teacher conferences? Do you enjoy going and meeting teachers? Does it help you know how your child is doing and what they can do better?

I hope the teachers and parents would get along with the meeting.

The few I had to go to I found a bit nerve-wracking really. It was very difficult not to stand up for a child I thought was a bit misunderstood. I guess I was just a typical Mum.

I hardly visit my son's school and yes we have a conference but I hardly attend that. The only time I go to my son's school is on card day actually. My son is doing well in school and the teacher would send messages to the parents if a child is having some problem. Fortunately the only messages I receive from his teacher is when the classes are cancelled.
