With the close of baseball season I'm remembering my favorite World Series series. (Is that world serieses? World seri?
) This "lower half" of the countdown has generally been World Series where I loved the outcome. The really great series will come later. Meanwhile, here's another series that I just loved.
#6: 1976: Reds/Yankees
Let's face it, there's no play called Damn Rockies!
So seeing the Yankees get their butts kicked -- swept!! -- in the World Series is a joy. Seeing my favorite team at the time do it was even better.
It's funny to think about it now, but the mighty "Big Red Machine" only won two World Series titles in the 70s (you'll see the other one on the list, too). They did appear in four in the 70s (70, 72, 75, 76). As of 2017, the Reds are the most recent National League team to repeat as World Series champions.
What a letdown after the previous year, but hey, it was the Yankees getting the whooping. The only close game was game two, where the Reds won in a walk-off. The Reds outscored the Yankees 22-8 in the four games.
This gave Sparky Anderson his second title. He would win his third and final championship in 1984 as skipper of the Detroit Tigers, making him the first (and, to date, one of only two [Tony La Russa is the other]) manager to win a World Series in both leagues. While I'm sure the Tigers fans are happy, Sparky's greatest contributions to baseball were at the helm of the Big Red Machine.
1976 World Series
Cincinnati Reds (NL) / New York Yankees (AL)
Winner: Reds, 4-game sweep
Best game: Game two (Reds won, 4-3)
Who I was pulling for: Reds
Tony Perez's game-winning hit in game two (and look at that route Ken Griffey took to home plate when he rounded third!
):

I didn't remember this series. Good God, the evil empire came back in 77 and 78 and beat the Dodgers.

Your trivia: the Y*nk**s have only been swept twice in the World Series. The other time was 1963, by the Dodgers.

Have to say that team, was probably one of the best dynasties baseball has ever seen from the 70's.

Anytime the Yankees get swept it is a great series! Reminds me of my childhood when Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale dominated the Yankees in a four game shellacking. Sandy struck out 15 in Game one of that 1963 series.
