conversations that only bus people have

United Kingdom

"I have a colleague at work who was stuck in traffic for twenty minutes last week. He didn't get home till five-thirty. Twenty minutes! Five-thirty! He doesn't know the half of it!" "I got the other bus last night. It might be slower but I could just hibernate." "Well, at least the bus is consistent. Consistently late." Passenger 1, a shocked tone: "You weren't in your usual seat last night!" Passenger 2, indignant: "I know! Someone got on the bus before me at *departure place*!" *everybody on the bus contemplates the enormity of this horror, reflecting silently on how easily it is done* Conversation stops. Phones and books appear in hands. The bus descends rapidly into beautiful silence. Well, until we've travelled a few miles down the road to Quaint Historic Market Town, whereupon every noisy person - but not his dog - will hop on board.

@Poppylicious I think it was on the X90 London to Oxford. You do hear some funny stuff on that route. I usually get stuck opposite some man who has turned the bus into his office and is loudly making deals and being very boring trying to look important. There is a whole army of this breed. I am not sure who they think they are trying to impress.

I haven't yet had the pleasure of that experience, to my knowledge. :)

I hate how mobile phones ruin an otherwise peaceful bus journey

I hate how phone use ruins almost every event - including just walking down the street - although I am guilty of it myself.

@arthurchappell Mine is mostly used for playing games and checking emails and doing surveys at bus stops so that I don't have to talk to people!

I had to take the bus to go to school, this was in Italy. Can you imagine how noisy people can be in Italy? It was a real pain for a shy, solitary and silent person like I am.

I can imagine. It is my every day, but with noisy British people who appear to be taking on the mannerisms of noisy Italian folk!

I don't take the bus. But if I do I would be one of those people who would just do something to block out all that noise.

My trusty tablet, my phone, or a book help with that!

Surprising how many places describe themselves as "Quaint Historic" - Plantation Village is seen around here.

@Poppylicious I remember I much preferred skirting around Glasgow en-route from the north-east to Stranraer... Eaglesham, on my route, was described as a "Historic Conservation Village", which always raised a smile.

I may have made up the Quaint. Although it is on the tourist maps. However, the little town of my home declares, Welcome to *this place*, an historic market town. We have a three stall market once a week, there used to be an Abbey here until it got burnt down hundreds of years ago, and it's one of the many hundreds of places which lay claim to Boudicca, in one form or another. You would think that for a town mentioned in the Domesday Book, it would have a little more history, but no ...

The bus isn't an option for me. If I was to take the bus the 30 minute drive (that has taken up to an hour, turns into at least two hours of transfers and missed connections.

I have no choice as I don't drive and Husband doesn't go my way. I don't mind though. I enjoy it, unless it's exceedingly late or ridiculously busy.

I love it, mostly. It's an interesting place to both people-watch and listen to conversations!

@poppylicious Thank goodness for Brexit and Westminster scandals to free our minds for a moment from having to think about the outrage of people sitting on other people's seats on busses.
