Favorite Australian Bands #1 - The Church

And here we are. We've reached #1 in my Favorite Australian Bands (an idea that @JudyEv suggested, and having done countdowns of both German and Canadian bands, I jumped in head first.) The top of the podium belongs to The Church. Led by vocalist/bassist Steve Kilbey, The Church formed in Sydney in 1980, and are still going strong. Despite having minimum turnover in 37 years, Kilbey has been the band's only constant member. Best known for their shimmering 1984 hit, "Under the Milky Way," The Church have released 25 studio albums, and 34 singles, and are in the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. (Fun Fact: Kilbey wanted to call the band "The Church of Man," but soon dropped "Man" from the moniker.) The Church is not only my favorite Australian band, but they are an all-time favorite of mine. They are a great live band (I can attest. I've seen them three times, and never left disappointed.) I've linked to a fantastic live performance, in Sydney, of "Aura," the title track of their 1992 album, Priest = Aura. It's proof that there is more to The Church than "Under the Milky Way." Enjoy!
