My younger brother will be graduating next year from college. I am paying for his schooling, and he will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Aircraft Engineering (Maintenance). He is in the Philippines with the rest of my family and I am sending him to PATTS College of Aeronautics (a private school). I am so proud of him and he's been a good young man. When I asked him what he wants for his graduation, he said a brand new car! What?!?! A brand new car is more expensive in the Philippines. If I am not mistaken a Toyota Camry is around $31,900! Here it is only around $23,000.
I told him that I have not gotten my own car until I started working in Dubai and I was already 26 years old then. And even now, I drive a 10-year old Jeep Cherokee. It is just too much and too impractical for him to get a brand new car after graduation. I told him nice try, though.

I think it is already very kind of you to pay for your brother's schooling. It is too much that he asked for a brand new car as the gift. You also have your own family and you also have to work hard. Especially your brother will graduate soon and that means to say he will find a job. On the contrary, he shall give you something back instead. Of course he can also buy himself something expensive as the reward if his salary is good enough.

I jokingly told him that a few years from now, I will be expecting that I will be flying for free in whatever airline I chose! Of course I do not expect anything in return from him. Just knowing that he will have a good life and be able to make it on his own is good enough for me.

I think you really nice to pay your brother's schooling. But I don't think you need buy him a new car. He can find a job then buy the car by his own.

Exactly! He can get it once he starts working and earning his own money. It is not really a necessity - we have a good public transport system in Manila. I do not want to spoil any of my younger siblings because I know it will only hurt them in the future.

i agree - it's too much and too impractical. it's better to let him experience working for it, through his own blood, sweat and tears, just like you did. then he can decide to drive for grab or uber to make money off it. hehe.

@Raine38 yes, but the money to buy the car should still come from him, not you. maybe he can save up from his first job and have a sideline so he can save faster.

@peachpurple That is crazy. He should not treat family that way. Even other people, you know, just because someone does not agree or gives you what you want does not mean it is okay to just ignore them.

Not to mention plus tax + license + fees.
He should be thankful for his college education that you paid for (which should be the gift). I don't think you are asking for the money back either plus you're sending tim to another private school so he can continue his education which is quite generous and nice of you!
I am sure he is just joking though hehe.

That's just too much and yes those are very expensive. Why can't he just try and rent a car first to practice his driving and realize how impractical it is to have a car.

When our son told us he wanted a new car...we asked him what kind. Then we bought him a matchbox model of the car and gift wrapped it. He got his car...just not what he was hoping for.
