An Awkward Ride

Today I had to go back to Oroville, a town about an hour away from me (I thought it was closer but lately it takes an hour to get there) for an appointment with my gastroenterologist. The appointment went well, but man was the car ride uncomfortable. The driver didn't speak the entire time and wouldn't even turn on the radio, so we just sat in awkward silence. The only sound was the wind whooshing outside the car and the sound of one of us coughing.
The rides are a lot less awkward and go by faster when the driver is friendly and chats with you, or at least turns on music for you to listen to. This guy was just rigid and weird. When he picked me up for the return trip, I said "hello again!" as I was climbing in the car, and he didn't even respond. I have really bad social anxiety and it makes it worse when someone just sits there and doesn't even acknowledge you've said anything. Ahh, well, at least I got there and back in one piece, and hopefully I won't ever have that driver again. He wasn't the worst I've ever had -- that honor goes to the big, dirty guy in short overalls who took me to Oroville once a couple months ago -- he looked like something out of "Deliverance," and his speech was almost unintelligible; he kept crunching ice out of a Big Gulp cup, and he stunk of B.O. really bad...he also didn't talk most the ride and wouldn't turn on the radio. I'm grateful my insurance covers these rides to my appointments, but I don't know about some of these drivers!

@Srbageldog Ohh they really need something like in PA, I know a lot of people without transportation so they just don't go.

It's a service my insurance (basically California's version of Medicaid) offers for those without transportation. They contract various taxi companies in the area to transport patients to and from their doctor appointments. This was a new company I had never rode with before. Hope I don't have to ride with them again, or at least not that particular driver. It was very uncomfortable!

@Ithink I didn't even know about it until my doctor mentioned it to me. I thought it was just for elderly people or people with obvious disabilities. I know New York and New Jersey both have the same (or similar) program, so maybe the people you know who don't have transportation should call their insurance (if they have any) and ask if PA also offers it.

@Courtlynn I considered it, lol. But then I would have been stuck in Oroville with no way home.

It's a service my insurance offers for those of us without transportation. They pay local transportation companies to shuttle patients to and from their appointments. I did look up the company that the stinky guy worked for (I've had problems with that company just not showing up sometimes!) but I can't find anything about them online. I would definitely leave them a negative review. The other companies aren't as bad, except the driver today was from a taxi company I'd never rode with before.

@Srbageldog That is cool though they pay for the ride. I mean you know how insurance companies try to pay for as little as possible. It would have been nice to know you needed an air freshener though.

@Srbageldog I hope you can find a way to complain of this rude driver.

I am not sure. I don't know if they have reviews online. I will look later and maybe leave a review if I can.
