My Neighbors Just Had to One-Up Me

In all the time that I have lived next door to my current neighbors, they have never put up Christmas lights. So imagine my surprise when I came home this evening, after having put up my own lights on our balcony this afternoon, to find that they had decorated their balcony with brighter, more colorful lights (my lights are white.)
Their balcony was not decorated when I decorated ours earlier today. And it still was not decorated when my boyfriend left for his second job at 6:00 this evening. But not even 45 minutes later when I got home, there it was, a bright display that overpowered mine. They must have rushed to do it as soon as they saw my lights come on.
I would like to think that maybe their kids saw the lights on my balcony and pestered their parents to put up lights of their own. That is what I would like to believe. But, knowing their dad's aggressive and overly competitive attitude, it's more than likely that he just couldn't stand to see that my balcony was more festive than his, so made sure to make his more festive than mine. Their bright, colorful lights are the first thing you notice when driving up the street. My warm white solar-powered lights pale in comparison.
Whatever. If it takes this pagan hanging a few strands of lights on her balcony railing to try to make the dark days of winter seem more bearable, to "inspire" my sourpuss Christian neighbors to make things more festive around here, then so be it. Maybe the other neighbors will follow suit, and we'll have ourselves a beautifully lit neighborhood.

I don't really care what they do...I just don't like the man next door and his constant need to be the best at everything. Maybe I should outdo them just so they'll make their display more elaborate. Then I can enjoy more Christmas lights.

I used to ALWAYS decorate for Halloween so one year all the neighbors tried to out do each other, No I was not in this. I would not allow the neighbors to bother you because they put up lights.
I am glad I live in the woods away from people.

The only thing that bothers me really is that they felt the need to rush out the same day and put up brighter lights than me. They are weirdos though. My solar lights stopped working after the first night (guess they are a just a piece of junk) so maybe I'll buy different lights and make fancier display.
I actually like looking at all the lights when the people in our neighborhood decide to decorate, but they rarely do. And these people never have at all, until now. I used to put up lights every year but hadn't for a few years because I hated the person who lived next door before these people moved in and didn't want her enjoying my lights, or to give her a reason to sit outside staring over here more than she already did.
I like decorating for the kids in the neighborhood, even if Christmas isn't a huge deal for me. I remember the excitement of it from when I was a kid and hope I can help make the neighborhood seem magical for the little ones.

@Srbageldog The solar lights need sun. Go for it, get brighter ones.

@andriaperry The solar panels are in a spot where they should be getting plenty of sunlight. They worked fine the first night, but ever since then they have been rather dim. It hasn't been cloudy or anything, so I don't know what I can do to make them get more sunlight. I may just get electrical powered lights and give the solar powered ones to my mom, they have a yard where they could probably get more direct sunlight.

I`m sure they felt the spirit of Christmas at the time they saw your Lights
I also got influenced by a few neighbors around as they started early decorating their balconies, gardens and even windows with wonderful lights

Haha, "Admiral A**shole." That's a good name.
I like the glow too, but the bf doesn't like anything "festive," so I don't know if he'd tolerate lights strung up year round. Maybe purple ones.
My stupid neighbors only ever turned their lights on when I remembered to turn on mine...otherwise they remained dark most the month.

I have only ever seen it happen on TV and in movies. I've never actually experienced it in real life before.

I have yet to put out one decoration. Hopefully I'll get the task done this weekend. I have thought about running a cord outside to light up the front of the place, but I'll probably just light it from inside and add decorations outside.
