#5 Odd Fact: Daily Post: Styrofoam: December 5, 2017

United States

As I research some of these astounding facts, I realize that I’m only dealing with what is happening here in the USA. But, when we multiply these numbers by 100+ countries in the world, we must realize that the situation is not unique to the USA. It is affecting the entire world. In fact, some countries have a bigger problem than we have here in the USA, when it comes to recycling and landfills. There are some simple things we can do, but most persons don’t really care about the environment. Do you? For instance: Do you use “Styrofoam” containers? Polystyrene foam is absolutely non-biodegradable. It never goes away! Think about that. What can we do? It has been estimated that here in the USA alone, enough Styrofoam CUPS are produced EVERY YEAR to circle the EARTH over 435 times. Picture that in your mind. Polystyrene is also deadly to marine life. It floats on oceans, and breaks up into pellets which looks like food to sea turtles. They swallow it and the buoyancy keeps them from being able to dive, and they starve to death. We must STOP using Styrofoam cups and plates and bowls. Don’t buy eggs in Styrofoam cartons! Ask for paper cups in restaurants. REFUSE to use Styrofoam EVER!

It's even worse. Officially, there are 194 states in the world. I don't use styrofoam cups or plates.

Yes, there are more than the 100+ countries in the world. That's for sure, but I don't know how many of them actually PRODUCE the Styrofoam products. I don't use them either. They should be banned.

@MALUSE Yes, I recycle plastic bags when I get them. Sometimes you just can't avoid them here. I have cloth shopping bags that I use too.

I saw it just yesterday when I stood in the grocery store looking at the different egg cartons. I can only HOPE that you are right, but I still see the Styrofoam cups and plates and bowls in the Dollar Tree. Shelves of them.

I was at a meeting and I could not believe what happened to me this evening. I got choked and started coughing like crazy and someone brought me some water, in, YOU GUESSED it! A Styrofoam cup. I couldn't believe it. But, I drank the water to stop my coughing fit.

@IreneVincent I have a feeling there are still plenty of vending machines holding styrofoam cups.

If people would just stop and think about some of these things. Even the small efforts we make are important.

there are perfectly good cardboard alternatives these days...or better still lets go back to using china cups and plates, and carry a drinking flask around for those coffees on the go.

Good ideas. We need to be more aware of things like this. Our Earth is being ruined. Revelation 11:18
