I hope we are not such friends. We truly want the ones who can help us out when we are in difficult times. I knew a few people who are willing to help others financially. They are even willing to lend or give their money and nothing they expect in return. Did it happen to you when you were loaded, more friends came to you to accompany you wherever you wanted to go? But when you were peniless, they seemed to stay away from you. These people deserve to be called friend-in-need-is-a-friend-indeed people.

I don't think we've had anyone really sponge on us for money. Maybe we never seemed - to others - to have much to spare.

They just want to be close to someone they think has a lot to splurge with them.

@yanzalong We have had people who were happy to let us pay for, say, a meal because they thought we had plenty of money.

I used to have people like those and I got rid of them too long time ago. It's been years since I decided not to be sucked on by people who call themselves my friends only when they need me.

Yes indeed. That's why I always say I ain't got no money. I don't mind sharing with friends, but darned if they don't try to get u to pay for their lunch when they just got a raise and have twice as much money you do.

I had posted one one on friends that elicited lots of responses and discussions: I had mentioned in passing that some stay away at the slightest hint of another needing help. Yes, it is a fact only few stay the course - most turn out as fair weather ones. I help others financially for emergencies but I will not overextend - siva
Frankly I have few real friends, but there are always the well-wishers to chip in in times of need. I try to keep a distance as some friends were intrusive. My...

My husband and I went through a small really poor time, and I realized something at that point. No one cares if your poor and they will probably avoid you.
