Christmas Baking Fails!

Earlier today I went over to my parents' house to make some Christmas goodies. My bf and I decided to give his relatives homemade fudge for Christmas. It has been a few years (at least) since I've made fudge, and this was a new recipe. Plus I was experimenting, since I wanted to make cherry fudge but they no longer sell cherry extract. I read online you can substitute it with the liquid from a bottle of maraschino cherries. So, that's what I did, taste-testing until it tasted "cherry" enough.
The only problem is, by that point I had added too much liquid and the fudge was runny.
So my sister said to put it in the freezer and let it set. Which we did. When we checked on it a while later, however...
...Somehow the pan got knocked over and a ton of the fudge had sloshed out all over the freezer.
So we had a mess to clean up, and I had to find a way to salvage the fudge. Luckily I had some more chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk (this was a recipe you make in the microwave) and I was able to add the part I had already made to the new batch, without it being too runny. I taste-tested it and it is delicious.
And this time it set!
Hopefully I'll be able to cut it into squares without any further mishaps.
And this is why I no longer bake!
It is too much of a hassle, and then I screw things up. But when it turns out right, I am a pretty good baker, if I say so myself. I must have inherited a bit of my baking skills from both of my grandmothers. My mom's mother was the best baker (and cook) in the world.
My other grandmother...not so much!

I like to bake and I always have the recipe at hand to check my progress. Unlike some who because they have been baking for a long time don't bother and measure the ingredients through memory and approximation. On the recipe sheet I would sometimes add notes and observation on how the product came out if I happen to be experimenting or modifying the recipe.

I follow recipes but will often add my own touch to things, and some things that I make, there never was an exact recipe for -- the dishes were just passed down to me by my mother, who learned them from her mother before her. You just taste test it until it tastes right.

Mine usually comes out okay, but the recipe I used to always make has a lot of steps and is very time consuming to make. I took the shortcut and used a "quick fudge" recipe I found online. But I thought to add the cherry flavoring, and since they don't make cherry extract anymore, I had to come up with a substitute. Next time I know better.

Atleast you did your best
I remember my failure when I started learning to bake a cake that didn`t even expanded
and the chocolate tasted burned cookies
Anyways, You`ll get it right just keep on trying

The first time I tried to bake brownies in my oven here in my apartment, I burnt them to a crisp.
I have definitely had my share of baking fails!

Yes, I think next time I'll stick to my tried and true recipe, and leave the no bake stuff alone!

@Srbageldog At most you can use a little bit of sweet cherry liquor, it's not as liquid as the juice of maraschino cherries.

I am horrible at cooking, but if there's one thing I can make that's just heavenly, it's fudge. But I can't take credit, I just follow the recipe out of the cookbook! lol

I normally bake a recipe that my mom passed down to me, which I have been making since I was a kid...it always turns out fine, but it's time consuming. I tried to cheat this year with one of those "no bake" microwave recipes...and decided to be creative with it...it turned out tasting good, but looked awful. I ended up scrapping that first batch and made a new one, which turned out okay.
