The Cold and Chilly weather making our life uncomfortable

Let me make two things clear right away: A)I am not a winter-hater. In fact, early winters is a time which I like because then we can use afternoon time for traveling and going from one place to another without fierce to humid heat. Weather is pleasant and one feels better without excessive use of Air-Conditioning. However, extreme winters are challenging. B)A high of 20 to 21 C and low of 4 to 6 C is not very low, as compared to nations near Arctic, places in US, Canada, Russia and Europe etc. However, since we face 42 + C heat in summers, this kind of fluctuation is very high for us, and if some day temperature goes to below zero we will be feeling almost frozen(In fact one day in Jan 2006, min. went to 0.6 C !! Brrrrr......) Now, the lows of 4 to 6 and less sunshine during the day is causing a lot of discomfort to us. To add to our woes, many thick clothes take 2 to 3 days to get dry(We have washing machines but sans dryers). Now washing machines with dryers have debuted in India, but they are very costly for us. Bathing and shaving are quite tough and washing hands with cold water is very discomforting too. How is the weather and cold/heat at your place?

the weather had turned from rain to hot sun now, that is better since my laundry took 3 days to dry

We never go over 12 degrees Celsius in winter (when we are very lucky) and the morning is usually around zero or a little lower. It's cold.

@LadyDuck I can imagine how freezing the Arctic like winds from Alps could be! We have places like Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh in India in Himalayas, which are kind of cut-off from rest of places in India, except for Air ways, and they have temperatures from -10 to -30 C.

@LadyDuck and during WWI, Italian and Austrian troops fought in Mountains in freezing cold! I can't imagine how they coped with snow, chill and may be even avalanches !

I have heard it said when people from warmer parts of India without winter go to northern side they hate the winter to start with but soon get used to it and then look forward to it! I know how tough it is as even below 20 C becomes uncomfortable for me and my heart goes out to the babies of poor parents who are exposed to such weather without proper clothing . On another note, most in India clean with water after defecation and not toilet paper. And that is real tough during winter! One of my colleagues was British and in our endless bantering before the internet I came to know he uses water too. I raised my eyebrows 'You too Brutus" and his reply "I know what is the better option to keep myself clean!" siva

@Shiva49 there was an article in a newspaper a few months back, where it was discussed that the Indian system of cleaning up with water is more efficient than Western system. However, in UK and US, they do not have arrangement for this kind of cleaning. However, one plus of winters is that we can venture outside in day time without the botheration of high heat or perspiration (humid heat), that we have in summers.
