A woman bought a $10 scratch-off and won $5 million

There was a woman who went to a store in NYC (where I live) to get a $1 scratch-off lotto ticket. The person behind the counter gave her a $10 one. At first she didn't want to take it but then decided to buy it. She used it as a bookmark for a few weeks. Then finally she decided to scratch it. She ended up winning five million dollars. Wow! I wonder how much she will get once taxes are taken out. I never buy $10 scratch-offs. The highest I spend on one scratch-off is $5 and that is rare. I usually get $3, $2, or $1 ones. Maybe I should cave in and get some for ten bucks. No matter what I buy I never win big :( I bought some scratch-offs for my birthday (though got them a day later) and ended up winning but it was only $42. Why can't I ever win a high amount? I am not asking for millions, though I'd never say no to that, but at least hundreds...

I used to look down on people who went to casinos or spent money on a lotto ticket but then I got married and my husband pointed out that we all spend money on entertainment in different ways. At any rate, we've bought a lotto ticket here and there. Usually for one of the "BIG" wins. Though I've come to notice a pattern: it's always those on the east coast or the middle states that win, not Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California...basically all of us on the west coast are SOL. Makes me even less interested in "playing". I'd love to win 5 million, though. Even with taxes taken out my family could do soooo much with a chunk of money like that. Completely pay off and renovate our house. Set aside money for all our kids. Travel. Help people... Ah, dreams!

Even $100 would look mighty nice, added into a check-book!

I wouldn't mind $100. I wonder what's the highest amount one can earn to not have to pay taxes...

Lucky person. Guess it all depends on how high the state taxes are.

Wow! What a lucky woman. I don´t buy a lottery so I don´t win.

I rarely play the actual lotto games. I prefer scratch-offs. They are fun and you potentially win, maybe even a lot of money.

I once won I think $436 in a penny slot machine. When the machine froze for a second I thought the machine stopped working and then I heard that ringing sound when the change is falling... except it was just the money adding up, as coins no longer fall at slot machines.

I have never played lotto at all. For some reason I don't want waste a few dollars to win millions. I know I have no luck in such things.

@lovebuglena I think we have also in our local lotto outlet. Is that the cards to scratch? Some people don't buy it saying it's a waste of money

@averygirl72 Yes, it's those lotto games you scratch.

I love this story, especially since her kids disowned her for being transgender and she isn't giving them a thing.
