it's a sick world

I had two days of annual leave last week. Because I work in education, term time only, plus six weeks paid holiday, I usually have to take my holidays at a given time, that being during ordinary school holidays when there is a lack of learners to support. However, having been in my current role for six years, I'm now entitled to the equivalent of three days paid annual leave. *squee*
Last week I went back to work on Tuesday, following our two week Christmas break. That was okay because it was just a yawnifying Personal Development day, and included free hot drinks and Digestive biscuits, reward for having to sit through meetings and workshops.
Wednesday and Thursday were then pure bliss. Being off work knowing that others are in work creates a feeling of insurmountable happiness. It gave me time to unwind following the frantic frivolity of Christmas. Completely guilt free.
But this isn't the reason for this post.
I have a competition going on in my head. Part of the competition is between me and all the colleagues in my department, but as it's in my head, they don't know about it. The competition is entitled, Who hasn't had a day off with illness for over two years? and the winner is Me. My prize? Self-satisfaction. But it isnt a smug satisfaction, nor a sense of superiority. The other part of the competition is between me and Me and involves never having to take a day off ill.
In six years I've had three days off for illness, the last of those being in January 2016. I think I've done quite well for someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, who is easily stressed, and who only has one kidney.
In fact, I think this makes me rather awesome and it's this feeling of awesomeness which keeps me going, even when the burden is too heavy, the tears want to flow and the body is certainly not willing. If I wake up not wanting to face the struggle, I remind myself that it's been *this* long since I was last off sick. Come on, girl! We can do this!
I don't know if this makes me ridiculously stupid. I don't know if this will have consequences further down the line. I don't know anything. But if it makes me feel better in myself, then that's good enough for me.

We can't accrue sick days. It would be nice. I can potentially be off sick for six months on full pay and a further six on half pay, so that's not bad. It woukd be a kerfuffle though! I am only ever off if I physically can barely move.

There was a time in my life where I prided myself on never being sick, or at least never taking a day off from work because of illness. But then I wised up and realized my employer provides me with sick days as well as annual leave, so it didn't make any sense that I wasn't using them. So now, I tend to get "sick" anytime I really need a day off. The attitude of my boss..."Well, you have sick days to use, so use them." Nothing like encouraging abuse of the system!
By the way, because of my tenure at the city I work for, I now am provided with 9 weeks of annual leave every year, plus an additional week on top of that because I am a manager. Ten total weeks per year, plus sick days! I've never taken that much time off in my life!

That's oodles of time! I get thirteen weeks a year, of which six is paid.
If we have more than four occasions off sick in one twelve month period it gets flagged by HR as needing a review of some kind. What gets me is that half a day off is counted as one occasion but so is three solid weeks. It makes the system a bit weak, but what do I know. I'm just a lowly worker who never takes a sick day.

Congratulations to be the winner! It's VERY well for someone who only has one kidney and other health problems. I have worked with (for) my husband all my life. In 45 years I only had to stay in bed 3 days, due to a serious infection. Usually when I had a cold, or I did not feel well, I worked anyway.

Me too. I work with people who talk about being so healthy because they do yoga and drink kale smoothies, but the first hint of a snuffle and they stay at home. I'd rather work when feeling poorly because it takes my mind off it.

@Poppylicious I have noticed this many times. Those who pretend to eat healthy, go to gym, do everything perfectly, are those who stay at home at the first sneeze.

It sounds as though you are doing fantastically well, and should be proud of yourself.
On the other hand I would warn against struggling in to work if you have something highly infectious. I used to work with a guy who prided himself on never having a day off no matter how ill he was. As a result he was always at work but about 6 other people would have to take time off. In the end we all just told him to stay at home!

@Poppylicious Either it's a great way of keeping your immune system busy, or a great way of catching every germ going!

@Fleura One of the first things they teach you when you train to teach is that you will get every illness going for the first year. After that, your immune system is amazingly strong!

I work in education, with something in the region of three thousand people breathing the same air on any given day. I mostly just get colds and whatnot, nothing that most people can't handle.
