What the Sam Walton — Ahem, Sam HILL — Is Going On?

Like many people, I’m a reluctant Wal-Mart customer. If you’re old enough to remember them from 30-someodd years ago you know exactly what I mean. The Wal-Mart of its founder, Sam Walton, was so different from today’s Wally World that it’s very difficult to believe they’re the same company. Well, they are in name only: the Sam Walton-era Wal-Marts prided themselves on “Made in the USA” products, while today’s Wal-Mart has “Made in the USA” stickers that are made in China.
Today something else happened that would have never occurred in the Sam Walton era. A number of Sam’s Clubs closed their doors permanently overnight, without so much as telling the employees. According to news reports in Business Insider and other sources, 63 stores closed with no notice at all, leaving hundreds suddenly unemployed and customers without a pharmacy outlet (not to mention useless membership cards that cost anywhere from $45 to $100).
What the Sam Walton - ahem, Sam Hill — is going on? Can’t these people give their employees the common decency of a two-week notice? If you want to see how quickly you as an employee can get “blackballed,” quit a job without giving a two-week notice! (Yes, I have done it in the past, and yes, it came back to haunt me.)
That earthquake in Arkansas was Sam Walton rolling over in his grave.

@FourWalls yup.my brother's job just did that to him.the place has new owners-1 week before christmas the employees were finally told they were outsourcing,(they hadn't been telling them anything to that point) and they were all losing their job this month.
they did tell them, but the heads knew damn well ahead of time.waiting til the holiday was really jerky to do.

What infuriates me about this is that these “business decisions” to close do not come “out of the blue.” Especially with a company the size of Wally World, they have to do “studies” to see if this store or that store is “economically feasible” to keep open. We aren’t talking about a fire or a tornado that forced a store to close, we’re talking about a decision that was made over time, and after a lot of research. There’s no way on this earth those unfortunate employees (and, as I said, customers who have prescriptions at their pharmacies) should have received no warning. NO way.

WOW. You would think it should be illegal for companies to do crap like that! So did all those employees show up for work, only to discover they were now out of a job?

YES. They showed up and saw a sign on the door.
I wish/hope the employees could sue.

@FourWalls I hope they can sue too. You would think they'd be able to, but who knows. There's so many laws protecting those big corporations.

I know what you mean since when the dad or founder of the company he or she founded passes away, whoever success that person wrecks the boat of the founder.

Change is not always for the better. Just like Sam Walton I am sure Colonel Sanders would not recognize his place either. Money talks and everyone else walks...

@FourWalls Wow, so many people already hate that store, so I'm not sure they want more bad attention. Corporations don't care about their employees, and this just proves it. Sorry, I was kicked to the curb myself, which is why I had to move in my embarrassing post.

That famous George Santayana quote comes to mind when I see news like this: “He who cannot learn from the past is condemned to repeat it.” If the people who ruin, ahem, run Wally World think it can’t happen to Wal-Mart, they are sadly mistaken. Woolworth’s used to be a huge chain. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a K-Mart. Sears used to be the name in department stores. Now one’s gone, one’s leaving, and one’s hanging on by a thread.

@FourWalls I hate it when businesses close down, even if they are big evil corporations, then people are out of jobs and it's probably not good for economy. It would be hard to picture walmart a thing of the past, but you're right it probably will be, and then we can receive everything at home.
