Carpet Cleaning

Anyone out here have any success with cleaning stains out of carpet without calling a carpet cleaning service? I did some Googling yesterday before work and found a DIY carpet cleaninf solution: baking soda and water. I have a couple of unsightly coffee stains on my light colored carpeted stairs. I ended up with white baking soda residue on my stairs instead. Sigh. I also read online that laundry detergent or vinegar can be mixed with water and used as a cleaning solution. Have you ever tried those? Or what do you use to clean your carpets?

We just cleaned the carpet yesterday. We rented a cleaner from Walmart--it's a lot of work but so much cheaper. Those cleaning companies with good deals have tried to up the price before, and when I didn't go for the better cleaning, the end result wasn't very good.
