Is a good percentage in school results important?

Education should be designed to prepare people for life. But nowadays more importance is given to the results. This is leading to a kind of pressure cooker environment for students who are finding it difficult to cope with the stress associated with taking exams. Both parents and teachers are also contributing to this stress. Shouldn’t education be just a stepping stone to a bright and successful future.

Sometimes I imagine an education system where tests and exams are done away with; that was when I was a student. After graduation and I became a teacher for some time, I discovered that the results of tests are important to both teachers and students. They are not the only important thing though. Teaching kids how to have skills for the modern world is equally important. It even trumps results-based education.

Our education systems should come up fully with skill based education system in India where after a certain grade student should trained in whichever field they are comfortable with. Skill based education should totally be based on ones area of interest. The burden of achieving certain percentage would then be a secondary thing !
