Ten Favorite Blues Brothers Lines: Unnecessary Violence (#9)

My, what a busy day I had. Aunts, uncles, and my niece and her family all got together and went to see my dad in the nursing home. After a nap I’m ready for the evening, and that starts with a look at another one of my favorite lines from the classic music/comedy film The Blues Brothers. Here’s today’s entry. #9: Use Of Unnecessary Violence in the Apprehension of the Blues Brothers Has Been Approved This is one of those lines that sneaks past you, like the “Oh, I see, Gestapo spank” line that Rick utters in Casablanca. So much is going on as the chase of the Blues Brothers ensues, with all of the battalions being assembled that you may not notice it. The police dispatcher is giving facts in a very sterile, monotone voice. He is detailing how the Blues Brothers are about to hit the city limits and Chicago police will be joining. After he says, “Maintain pursuit,” you see a quick cutaway to a group of mounted police. That visual may have you laughing so hard that you might not hear the dispatcher tell the police they have approval to utilize as much force as possible. Yes, that’s a pitiful police stereotype “in the real world.” But this is a comedy movie, and let’s face it, the entire police chase is a Keystone Cops routine....on steroids. Use Of Unnecessary Violence in the Apprehension of the Blues Brothers Has Been Approved — Police Dispatcher (Ralph Foody) And the chase is on (first line in the clip):

I think the real beauty of the entire movie is that there is always so much going on you can watch it over and over again and still see or hear things that you missed the five million or so times you watched it before!

That's a great line. It's a pity when a good line like this gets by unnoticed in whatever else is going on.
