Halfway through the countdown of my favorite lines from the classic film The Blues Brothers, we reach one that is so obvious for me to love. Given that it's only #6 by now you're probably formulating what #1 is, if you know this movie well. And, oh, what a movie worth knowing well, for both the comedy and the music!! Here's today's line.
#6: That Ain't No Hank Williams Song!
How much do I love this line? A few years ago, I gave a presentation at the country music conference about the growing number of country songs that have, as their subject matter, how country music doesn't sound country anymore. I titled the presentation, "That Ain't No Hank Williams Song!"
You gotta admit, ol' Bob (played by the late Jeff Morris), owner of Bob's Country Bunker where the Blues Brothers faked their way into the gig pretending to be a country band, wasn't all that fast. The horns should've been a dead giveaway that the Blues Brothers' opening song (a cover of "Gimme Some Lovin'") wasn't a Hank song. Not Hank Williams...nor Hank Thompson, Hank Snow, Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland, Hank Penny, or Hank Locklin!!
The delivery is priceless. I think the fact that it reminds me so much of my dad and his obstinate attitude about country music is what endears me to this line.
That, and it's a dang funny moment.
That Ain't No Hank Williams Song!
-- Bob (Jeff Morris)
Move it on over and gimme some lovin':
