I'm off to learn Tai Chi

Shortly I’ll be going into our small town Donnybrook to attend my first Tai Chi lesson. A friend has organised for an instructor to come and has got together a group of people to attend. I don’t do any form of structured exercise and Tai Chi sounds a nice, relaxed type of movement suited to my advanced years. The class will be held in the amphitheatre. This is a well-used area and we attended a free film there a week ago. A Wine and Dine day is also held there regularly. However when the river floods the area is likely to go under water. Hopefully we’ll be strutting our stuff in the shady area. Have you ever done Tai Chi?

I've never done Tai Chi before, but we have many Tai Chi groups in our city parks, and there is also a small group that comes and does Tai Chi at one of our public swimming pools.

@JudyEv Maybe you can practice Tai Chi from the comfort of your couch! Now that would be some exercise that I would enjoy doing! lol

It's pretty simple in a way I guess but I didn't know two arms and two legs could go in so many different directions. Being a couch potato would be much easier.

@moffittjc The co-ordination is actually quite tricky and I've only just started!

I didn't feel too graceful this morning and I'm sure I didn't look it either. Maybe in months to come.

It sounds like fun. Not Tai Chi, but I have taken a few QI Gong classes.

@snowy22315 I'm a bit like that too. I can't really imagine myself doing this for too long - but maybe I'll get to enjoy it.

Anne took Tai Chi here for several years until her back got bad. She wants to go back to it now. Her teacher was a Japanese woman immigrant, Chen style.

Ours is apparently Sun style - pronounced 'Soon'. There was about 20 of us there so that's good.

@JamesHxstatic I'm sure it will be good for me. Just have to convince that other little voice inside that I need to keep going.

I do not have formal training but I do my own form of it as often as I can. Have fun...it is very stress relieving.

I have heard about it but never felt the desire to go for it. Do get back and tell us your experience. How many days will that be before you grasp the technique?

@JudyEv I used to quite like doing Yoga until I had that accident. That accident introduced me to physiotherapy which I was diligent about as it did help me immensely. My doctor has told me I should continue doing it but sometimes I just do not feel like. It is particularly good for strengthening the limbs.

It's held once a week so it may be a few weeks until we learn the basic moves. I've never been into exercise so I am a bit of a reluctant participator.

many, many years ago, i remember seeing small groups of them practicing at luneta park. is it only slow movement or is there breathing and meditation involved?

There seems to be different 'styles' or disciplines but all seem to involve slow movement, controlled breathing and meditation as you suggest. Our style is called 'Sun' Tai Chi.

That sounds it could be relaxing. I never done it before. I believe my cousin had in the past. Not sure. But my gym does have lessons for it.

This one is designed for people with arthritis and, although I don't have much arthritis, it should suit me.

My niece does tae kwon do but that's more self-defence I think. If anyone abducts me they'd drop me at the first lamp-post. Providing it's dark but they wouldn't take me in the first place if it was light.

@JESSY3236 It seems a bit too non-violent to be of much use in self-defence.

Not really being into sports I'm a bit half-hearted about it but it was okay. Most things that are good for you aren't a whole lot of fun.
