Trump proposes big changes to food stamps

In addition to trying to slash the funding by 30% over the next 10 years, he wants to limit the food options that can be purchased with food stamps or EBT. Another change proposed is having 80% of people receive some of their "benefits" in the form of a USDA food package: a box of non-perishable items like shelf-stable milk, pasta, peanut butter, beans, and canned fruits/vegetables. Honestly, I don't see how the government would do a very good job of efficiently distributing "food packages" to food stamp recipients like some kind of glorified food pantry each month. Seems to me that it is easier to just let people buy their own stuff. That being said, many people have been in favor of limiting what types of products can be purchased with EBT benefits--healthy, nutrient-dense staples rather than junk food like soda, chips, processed meals, etc. Interestingly, the red states are traditionally the ones that receive the most government assistance in the form of things like food stamps. They are also Trump's biggest fans. I wonder how they will feel about their hero slashing funding and making changes to this system.
President Trump's new budget would severely restrict the kinds of foods that food stamp recipients could buy with the government assistance.

Funny how that whole Red State thing works, isn't it? Idiots. Somehow, they will find a way to convince them that it's Obama's fault, and they will believe it.

This will probably be the only time I agree with Trump on. There needs to be more restrictions on what people on food stamps can buy. I see it every day , they buy candy, cookies and soda. Energy drinks and other crap. That is ridiculous to me.

I see it too. Then they wind up with diabetes and the taxpayers wind up paying for that because they are on Medicaid.

@NJChicaa I love when they're excuse is that they can't afford healthy food..that's bullshit. If I can afford to feed two people and two animals without food stamps or a handout so can you.

@thislittlepennyearns Healthy, unprocessed meals made from scratch are a helluva lot cheaper than crap. It is just laziness and an unwillingness to learn how to cook for yourself.

That red state thing will be interesting. It is silly to let people by junk food at taxpayer expense. A cut like he proposes is heartless though, no surprise.

Oh that's just ducky considering I only get $16 a month in Food Stamps @NJChicaa . And what I usually buy with that is a container of fresh Spinach, a garlic pod, a container of tomatoes and 5 TV dinners. That equals 5 days of food.

@NJChicaa I'd be tickled spitless if I got $50 a month.

The changes are said to affect those receiving over $80 worth. At least as far as the food box thing goes. I don’t know about the limits on what can be purchased.

I know some people live on pre made meals from the frozen section because they do not know how to cook. BUT I do not think candy, cookies and chops should be bought with food stamps
