My fear of dogs

dogs are dangerous

There are dogs everywhere in my area. You have Alsatian dogs, black local dogs, hybrid dogs – all sorts of variety. What beats me is that I am afraid of dogs. I don’t know why. Even the little dogs people keep in their rooms make me scared. I’d never enter a compound where there was a dog. It has to be chained or put it in its kennel before I can be confident of approaching such a compound. I find this fear extreme. So many people have told me so. I really don’t know how to conquer it. Is there something you are afraid of that you think is extreme or irrational?

None. I don't seem to have any irrational fear.

@mydanods The only thing I used to fear were ghosts. But I got over that fear and I fear none now. I don't fear anything but I'm not a hero. So no I don't want to save the world.

If you fear a dog do not ever feel bad about it. I had a very good reason to fear dogs before because my Mother got attacked by a Staffie when she was carrying me before I was born. I screamed blue murder at every dog I came across till I started to grow up with them and lost all the fear. It could be anything that sparked your fear so avoid dogs till you can get someone to help you out with the fear it can be overcome. I had a German Shepherd Dog and they are really very silly dogs but that is if you are the owner of one. He is a good boy but got to be too much for me.

Sorry for your mother's attack. It's wonderful that you grew out of your fear and now own a German Shepherd. I wish that could be said the same of me.

@mydanods It took me about a year to be able to go near a dog even but I did it and so can you and again if needs be get help from someone who knows how to help you get over it. Don´t feel bad about it and we all have fears. Not one of us is not afraid of something at least.

Just remember a lot of times the dog is just as wary of you as you are of it. Dogs can sense nervousness. If a dog does approach you try not to panic if it sniffs you. They like to do that. Every time a dog approaches me I let it sniff my hand. It tends to relax after that. I understand you cannot do that because of your fear. Is there a tiny dog you could maybe use to get more comfortable? Maybe an older, more calm dog? That just seems like an awful fear since dogs are so plentiful. I am afraid of spiders. I mean I won't go nuts, but I avoid them, and they creep me out. It all has to do with a childhood experience.

@mydanods When I was three I was locked in a closet. As the door was shutting I saw a daddy long legs. When the door shut I couldn't see where it went. So for the next four hours I was trapped in the closet with no way of knowing where it was. I think that is why they bother me now.

I have a friend who has lots of dogs. He has tried to teach me to play with them but I won't go near. You afraid of spiders? When I see a spider, I let it live and go on its way. I don't do such with cockroaches.

Me too. I forgot about that. The ones I have seen in pictures look scary. I have seen a few here in Lagos. One was the one we caught at my secondary school ceiling. We let it fly to safety.

I love but am afraid of bees! I usually just hold my breath and wait for it to fly along its merry way!

Lol. It must be a scary thing to encounter one. I have never seen any bee in my life; except in documentaries.

@mydanods They are adorable and really not aggressive. I just had the misfortune to get stung once. I'm highly allergic!

The thing is - animals can sense if you are frightened of them, so they are likely to be more agressive towards you.

I've heard that said before. They must have better senses of fear than we humans then because they become aggressive from even a far distance.
