A New Adventure

I signed my daughter up for softball last weekend. We got there and they announced they were short on coaches and try to get some parents to volunteer. No one did. We are also stretched out with work and family, it would be a straining commitment. The director announced they were gonna have to cancel for the season since they did not have enough coaches. Seeing the disappointment in my little girl's eyes, I volunteered. I thought I would just be assisting, but it turns out they assignment me a head coach position. This is totally new for me. I was so nervous. I went through watching tryouts and recruiting my team. Last night we had our first practice. A sweet, family friend stepped up and volunteered to be my assistant coach. She has never even played softball, much less coached. Turns out, we have about 3 players that are brand new to the game, as well. We will all be learning from each other, but what fun we had. It made me feel young again. Most of all, my baby girl laughed, worked hard, and had a blast. This is a new adventure in my life, and adventure is not an overstatement. Its funny how the unexpected things in life can help you grow and bring joy. My daughter told me that she was happy that she and I would be bonding as coach and player as well as mother and daughter.

Such a nice story Denise. Glad you were able to support your daughter as the coach of her team. Sports are a great way to socialize, learn a skill, and discover what teamwork is all about. Plus, playing the game is fun!

Hey there,
As I read that no one volunteered, I was afraid you wouldn't. Because it seemed like such an opportunity to have a lot of fun, even though it could be time-consuming. And as I read on, I was a little bit disappointed that you didn't volunteer. Glad to see that turn of events in the end.
Sports is not always about technique or skills. Skills are developed through hard training and technique is learned. It's all about effort. It is a new task for you, a new task for many, and now you have guaranteed fun. Don't be too harsh on the kids - but put them in the right path.
Have a nice time!

Time-consuming is an understatement. We just buried my daddy after a 6-month, all encompassing battle with liver and kidney disease. Taking care of him was our priority. We are now trying to deal with caring for my mother who has demetia as well as other health issues. I help with two of my grandkids, I have just started a new business (we need extra income), and I homeschool my daughter and operate a homeschool cover group. Life is a little overwhelming at the moment. It is not that I did not want to be there for my daughter. I am the one there for her because in the midst of everything else, I am the one who gets her back and forth to games and practices (some of them being out of town) back during volleyball season. So I am doing the best I can and I am tired and beat down emotionally. That is why I waiting till there were no other options to volunteer.
