Yes. it is very dangerous. It is long time I am keeping this topic in mind to post, but honestly I am lazy to post. It is disastrous to keep and onion for long time as it can consume dangerous bacteria.
Have you heard, when there is fever, flue etc (spreading) if you keep and onion cutting both (upper and lower) then keep the same under your bed, you will remain healthy. Two days after you can find yourself the colour change of onion.

That is what the post in whatsapp says ...otherwise also there certain vegetables and fruits which change color by interacting with air.Like if you cut an apple and exposed to air within few hours you will see it turns brown, it is because of oxidation this occurs!
Please go through the blog (link :Courtesy - @MALUSE) to get the facts.
Onions like any other vegetables can become infected but then they don't have the special power of attracting the virus or bacteria, that is what the blog says! Kindly use your own discretion before jumping to any conclusion dear @Sreekala! Thanks!

I read a blog regarding onions and it says onions get easily contaminated so it's not healthy keeping it for tomorrow's use when you had cut it already.

Yes, I understand that...but there is no scientific reason behind that, once if the onion is cut into pieces and stored in refrigerator then nothing would happen to that and it will be fir for consumption for next day dear friend @renicemae! Along with me there are many members who are living example to prove it!

Even I got that message on WhatsApp. I prefer not to leave cut onion for later use. My grandmom used to say that cut onions and cucumber in salad are main cause of food poisoning if consumed later. So it just got into habit and I had no knowledge of the scientific reason.

If it is cut and then refrigerated, I'm sure it's fine.

I do not know...
But I try not to leave any leftovers when I cook. I do not like throwing food away, so I am careful not to leave it spoiling.
If I had some onion left, I would wash it in hot water before using

You even need not wash them in hot water...all that you need to do id store the cut onions in a separated enclosures like small container or disposable wraps of edible qulity!
Yes if you feel that temperature can play a role in spoiling the onions then we have a big implement to resque us....the refrigeration which we can always use!
Thanks dear @MashaVickina! Thanks!
