Let's Keep It Nice for a Change

I just watched the ceremony where Billy Graham's body was brought to the US Capitol to lie in honor. The minister, known as "America's pastor," is the fourth "civilian" to lie in honor at the Capitol (the other three being Rosa Parks and the two policemen who died in the 1998 Capitol shooting). It was a very sweet and moving ceremony. And, for once, all those clowns in Washington seemed to be getting along for a moment. Let's see if we can keep it nice, for a change. I seriously doubt it. When the news of Graham's death was announced last week somebody wrote an article calling him a piece of excrement (although she didn't use the word excrement), and closed her, ahem, "tribute" by saying, "Have fun in hell, b*tch." Is this where we are as a country? A good man dies; and, instead of saying something like, "I didn't agree with his religious beliefs, but he was a good, honest man who was above reproach," someone (a number of people, actually) take the lower-than-a-snake's-belly route. Maybe it's the fact that we don't have many good, honest men who are above reproach in the public eye anymore, and that throws people off kilter. Whatever the reason, the person who could speak evil of a man who tried to do nothing but good has more issues than Billy Graham ever did. Theme song for the day:

Religion has always brought out the best and worst in people...mostly the later. I often question the need for religion in order to live a moral life.

I was surprised by that horrific response by a left winger. Graham was a strong civil rights advocate who in the 50s asked MLK to join him on the crusades. He insisted in integrated audiences.

Some people don't like anyone, not even themselves, so it does not surprise me that this happened.

Yeah, it's hard for anyone to find something to criticize Billy Graham about., but some always will. He'd be the first to admit he wasn't perfect, but his whole career and life wasn't about him, it was always about Jesus.

I will say that, although he was obviously rich, he came across as actually wanting to spread the word as opposed to just trying to fleece the flock for as much as he could get like the rest of them.
