Is this comment rude

A woman was announcing her wedding plans to a group. She was so excited about it. She is 45. Suddenly somebody said: Better late than never. I thought that was rude. But I just didn't want to conclude until I hear what others have to say. I think it's just like saying to someone who's had several miscarriages: better late than never. It's rude and insensitive. Is this rude?

I agree with @thehousewife, if it's not indended as a joke, it is rude.

@mydanods Because if it's a joke among friends it is acceptable, but if it is just a statement it is rude. Saying better late then never is just like saying that she was unable to find someone to marry before. It is not nice.

@LadyDuck It's a statement. I think it was thrown for effect. I can't really judge the intention though.

Well, I felt it was but wanted another opinion. I could say they are close although not too close as you might think.

I would be furious if someone said that to me. The person was indeed, being very insensitive. Some people just love to put others down!

How would we know whether it was rude or not. We don't know the relationships between these people and it's none of our business. Could be a standing joke between them. Only ONE person can decide that and SHE is the only person who has a say. It's time people stop telling everyone else how to be.

Okay. But whether they were close or not, would you think that was a wise statement to say, to someone who must be thinking about it herself?

@MALUSE Haha. Humans always want to know what others think. It helps us shape our social behavior. We are social animals. Why do you think social networks are so popular?

That is a common saying for events like that, it is seen as a joke. Weddings and miscarriages have no correlations if they said it to a person who has had several miscarriages yes it is rude. But for weddings, not really. It is just teasing.

Kinda rude, also kinda jealous in some way, but not wanting to admit it. Whenever someone says a smart-a$s comment like that, it usually means they are angry at themselves or at life in general, or they are jealous. Besides, 45 is the new 35 anyway. I'm not a fan of marriage, but I'm not angry about it, and I certainly don't get jealous when I see other people getting married and drop rude comments on them whenever I can. But I do secretly pray I don't get invited to the wedding. I HATE events like that.

It does seem a little rude especially as people get married at all sorts of different ages but it depends on how well she knew the woman. It may have been said with humour,

What irked me is that she is now 45. Better late than never reminds her of how late she is in getting married.

It can be if the person doesn't know anything about the person getting married. On the other hand, if it's a very good friend, it might have been meant in fun.

If it was meant in fun, it was the wrong time. This was a time when the wife-to-be needed encouragement and help; not being reminded of a weakness.
