In 1974 the biggest song of the year was “The Way We Were” sung by Barbara Streisand. It hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for three weeks. It was a song that could make people sentimental. It was on her fifteenth studio album by the same name and the song also lent its name to the popular movie starring Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford in 1973. This year the song of the year was “Killing Me Softly With His Song” sung by Roberta Flack. It won for Record of the Year and for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Only thing is that I didn’t particularly care for it nor did I really understand what the song was all about. Still, the song became a number one hit in the U.S. and even made it on the U.K. charts. Finally, the best song of the year was “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie. This song was a part of his album Diamond Dogs. The genre of the song is considered to be glam rock, proto-punk. I have to admit this is the first time I have heard this song so it is up to the experts who know to decide if this song is good. It became Bowie’s last song in glam rock. What do you all say?

We saw Roberta Flack at a concert at a big vineyard in Western Australia but we thought she was really past her best by that stage.
