No music posts yesterday due to a hot date with an emergency room doctor, but I'm back! Let's see...1977 was the year I graduated from high school. Music started to really stink, based on the chart-toppers for the year. (Doubt me? The #1 song of 1977 was "You Light Up My Life." I rest my case.) But there were some gems in there, and I picked this one for the representative of 1977 in number one songs.
1977 (Pop): Rich Girl - Daryl Hall & John Oates
Well, well, well. According to Picky Wedia, it wasn't a rich girl who inspired this, but rather a spoiled-rotten rich boy who was the son of a fast food magnate. Daryl Hall said, "You couldn't write a song called 'Rich Boy.'" Sure you could, but I don't know if it would have been as big a hit.
I don't know what was in the water in the 1980s that turned so many acts that I liked in the 70s into mushy shells of their former selves, but Hall & Oates definitely fall in that category. I loved the follow-up to this song, "Back Together Again" (which is one of the few songs that John Oates sang lead on), but it didn't do as well as that spelling bee stuff they put out in the mid-80s. Okay, so I'm a fuddy-duddy. That's why I'm looking at #1 songs: to prove I do know a popular song or two.
This is a major highlight in the career of Hall & Oates, and the era I prefer.
Rich Girl
Written by Daryl Hall
Recorded by Daryl Hall & John Oates
From Bigger Than Both of Us, 1977
#1 for two weeks
(A little trivia: the song "Bigger Than Both of Us" isn't on this album!)

We graduated HS on the same year
, yes Debbie Boone's " You light up my life " was number 1 for a long time. I can't recall hearing or knowing this one though.

Morrissey or Bronski Beat could have gotten away with "Rich Boy." Of course, in the 80's.

Their best stuff was always Pre-Private Eyes. I remember listening to their "Abandoned Luncheonette" album and saying not a bad song on the record

Thanks, glad you like it. I remember buying the 45 of this when it came out, so it's always been a favorite. My dear, late mother even liked it.
