I'm looking at a select #1 song for each of my first 25 years of life. I hope to finish this before I turn 60. Seriously, I renewed my driver's license today and realized that, when it comes time to renew them again, I'll have hit retirement age. Ouch. But here's a pleasant memory from that long road that has carried me to middle age, a #1 song from country music at the turn of the 80s. 1980 (County): I Believe in You - Don Williams Ah. Don Williams probably had the best voice this side of Jim Reeves. A good songwriter (although a lot of his "hits" were written by others) and a fabulous voice brought the Gentle Giant, as he was known, into stardom from the folk group the Pozo-Seco Singers and took him all the way to the Country Music Hall of Fame. This is one of his biggest hits, a song filled with a list of things that the narrator finds hard to accept ("I don't believe the price of gold, the certainty of growing old...and being first is being best), then adding in the chorus, "but I believe in love...and I believe in you." It may seem to be a "statement" song, but it's more a love song than anything. And good. It's definitely that. I Believe in You Written by Roger Cook and Sam Hogin Recorded by Don Williams From I Believe in You, 1980 #1 for two weeks I don't believe in superstars:
