Should boys and girls be allowed to use the same toilets in school?

United Kingdom

So I have an 8 year old daughter. It’s recently come to my attention that her year and upwards in her school, have boys and girls use the same toilets. My first reaction was shock because i am pretty sure I never had to when I was a kid. As well as that, there’s the fact that you just don’t know what goes on in the toilets. Boys/girls could be peeking under cubicles, or leaving doors open and god forbid showing there “bits”. So am I crazy in thinking that this isn’t right? I’ve spoken to a few other mums and, like myself they had no idea that this was a thing? I don’t know whether I’m being an overprotective parent or whether I should speak to the head teacher about it. Any advice is welcome. I am new to this also, so be nice :)

I personally don't support unisex toilets as I think it could question the security of girls.

In my knowledge each and every schools in our country has separate toilets for boys and girls. How it comes unisex toilets in this particular school. Have an urgent meeting with the Principal and request them to take necessary action immediately.

Welcome to myLot! I had separate bathrooms too, the girls enjoyed it because we were cleaner compared to boys. Maybe this was implemented for gender-neutral children, new terms that might not make much sense, but they do exist nowadays. The fact is that we never had problems back then, and now we do. You can also start a petition and ask other mums to sign it, you may receive a fast response that way.

@ellsbells If you all complain about it, you'll surely be heard and taken into consideration. I'm okay with all genders, but children also have biological sexes and separate bathrooms are made for that, so yeah, I would be worried as well. They would probably just be curious and play around, but it's still uncomfortable.

@ellsbells @sabtraversa I have to disappoint you. Girls are not always cleaner than boys. When I started teaching, we had a secondary grammar school for boys and one for girls in our town. I was at the school for girls. For some lessons, boys came from the school for boys to our school. I remember them complaining about how dirty the classrooms were. A teacher of physical education said that he always finished his sports lessons early enough so that the pupils could wash or even take a shower. Hardly a girl did. They preferred spraying layers of perfume over their stinking bodies.

Yeah that’s a good idea. Especially if the school doesn’t take what I say seriously which happens sometimes ?? Girls are always cleaner than boys anyway, in all aspects of life ?? but yeah maybe. It’s always a touchy subject nowadays because of all this gender neutral stuff, which I don’t really have a say on except people should just be who they want to be and wear what they want to wear regardless of gender. It’s just 8 years old and up, there minds and body’s start going through small changes, and the thought of not knowing what goes on in the toilets is a bit scary ??

You must have meetings of parents and teachers once or twice a year. You could start a discussion there. I was a teacher for 40 years (in Germany). I've never seen unisex toilets for the pupils.

@MALUSE That’s exactly what I mean. If you, a teacher of 40 years have never seen unisex toilets in schools, then why is it suddenly an ok thing in my daughters school? So yes, I think I will have to set up a meeting with a teacher. Thank you

We had separated bathrooms and I think it's better than sharing. You should have a meeting with the other moms and discuss this matter.
