Overplayed Classic Rock Songs I'm Not Sick of (Yet): Africa (#8)

I got started late last night and plumb dumb forgot to post another song that has been played to death and back again, and yet hasn't lost its luster for me. Not yet, anyway. I'm sure this song may rank quite highly on a lot of people's choices of "songs I never ever want to hear again," but I haven't reached that point. Here's today's overplayed classic rock staple. #8: Africa - Toto And let's get one thing straight right off the bat: the lyric is, "I BLESS the rains down in Africa," not "I guess the rain's down in Africa." I'm sure that helped you if you're tired of hearing this. As for me? No. In fact, it's my phone's "main" ringtone. I have a few ringtones I can select, and for right now it's set to "Africa." (I make my own ringtones in iTunes, thank you, but that's another discussion.) According to Picky Wedia, this isn't a love song, per se. It was inspired by David Paich seeing documentaries on the plight of people in various African nations. And dang, that chorus. Whether you sing it as "I bless" or "I guess," it'll stay in your head. This song never gets played just once on my iPod. Africa Written by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro Recorded by Toto From Toto IV, 1982 The wild dogs cry out in the night:

I remember back in the days I did get sick of this song . . . it was totally overplayed. But now when I hear it (sometimes I will in stores), I get that uplifting feeling as I did when this song came out.

If you turn it up really loud, about halfway through, you should hear what sounds like a chicken. At least, that was the case with the version that we played at the station.

A song that should have been nominated for a Grammy but got passed over in favor of the group's other hit "Rosanna" which won record of the year in 82.
