Are Cars Becoming a Thing of the Past?

By “car,” I mean the traditional “sedan” style automobile. I’ve noticed that I’m seeing more and more SUVs and minivans and fewer “cars.”
Of course, I’m guilty myself: last year I traded by Civic in on a “crossover” SUV. (So yes, I’m driving a fake SUV, not a “real” one.
) The main reason I did so was because my back screamed bloody murder at me after four days of driving on a road trip. With an SUV it’s so much easier to get in and out, even though it’s only about five inches higher than the Civic was.
Minivans, or “people haulers,” I understand. Lots of room for the family, the kids, the kids’ friends, the kids’ friends’ soccer gear, and the groceries. And those cute little stick figure families on the back window. (In contrast, I see the occasional SUV with a zombie or monster chasing a stick figure family, or even one that says, “Your stick figure family was delicious!”
)
Of course, I still see lots of cars, but when I arrived at the restaurant this morning, all four vehicles in the parking lot at the time were SUVs or minivans. I wonder if the SUV has become “sexy” or “trendy” and is leaving the sedan sitting at the red light in American popularity.

The SUVs are definitely trendy. I don't get it. They're not very fuel efficient.

They have so many different types today. I refer to mine as a "fake SUV," it just looks like one. It gets the same gas mileage as my Civic did. It's definitely no H3 from Hummer (which is rated in gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon)!!

I sold my car 2 years ago and decided to rely on taxis and Uber for transportation to the Metro.

I always said I would never drive a soul. the hampster ride, but when it came down to walking and riding, I took the soul. Who knew they would be so comfortable?

You mean you aren't cruising with the Clash in a Brand New Cadillac?

I'd pick a SUV/minivan over a sedan every time.

Unlikely. Just only some parts of the cars may no longer be available maybe and auto drive will eventually replace driving.

In Australia, SUVs are a status symbol although in the city thousands of them never see a dirt road. Some young Mums like them as they think their family is safer in what is perceived to be a stronger car. They probably think it is safer if they're texting or talking on their mobile or whatever too.

I was of the frame of mind that I would never, ever own a minivan. Look at me now! Yes, we want to get a bigger van, but I never saw myself driving anything but a 4X4.

I drive a small car (Hyundai Getz) and love it. The only reason I would ever buy a bigger vehicle is if I was planning to do extensive road travel (such as a trip round Australia) in which case I would get something like a Toyota bus and convert it. I hate SUVs.
